The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue supported the building of a school in Bangledesh several years ago and we are pleased to welcome Gem back to our club to update us on teh work that Amarok is doing.

Dr. Tanyss Munro has devoted her life, with her husband, best-selling author Gem Munro, to improving educational opportunities for vulnerable children and youth around the world.They designed effective, new approaches to overcome chronic disadvantages faced by troubled Indigenous communities through education. This pursuit took her from Canada's far north as Director of Education, to senior advisor for regional Indigenous governments, to Parliament Hill as senior advisor to Ministers of Indigenous and
Northern Affairs Canada.Tanyss and Gem founded Amarok Society in response to the still ongoing education crisis where one in three children world-wide is growing up illiterate.
Echoing what many had said about Indigenous children and youth, many experts dismissed these marginalized mothers as incapable of making real change. This only deepened the Munro’s conviction to find a way to reach these destitute, overlooked children and in 2006 they took a brand new approach. For their work, they are the recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.
