Life as a Member of Parliament - before, during and after
Jan. 10, 2023
Join us to hear from former MP Rahim Jaffer about what life is like as an federal leader in Canada before, during and after his role in Ottawa. Rahim Jaffer has a unique set of experiences that stems from years of work in both senior government and senior business management. Mr. Jaffer was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons on June 28, 1997, representing the Federal Electoral District of Edmonton Strathcona. At the age of 25, he was one of the youngest Members of Parliament ever elected in Canada and the first Muslim MP. He was re-elected in the subsequent federal elections of 2000, 2004 and 2006, serving nearly a dozen years in office. Mr. Jaffer served as Chairman of National Conservative Caucus (Jan 2006-Oct 2008), Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition (Dec 01- Apr 02), Opposition Critic of Intergovernmental Affairs, Environment, Industry, Border Security. He served as a Member of the Standing Committees of Environment, Industry, Immigration and Scrutiny of Regulations. During his three years of service with the Government, he held the position of National Caucus Chair, named by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. This position played a crucial role in facilitating communication between Members of Parliament and the Prime Minister (PM).
More recently, overcoming the challenges of Covid, an economic slowdown and inflation, it is his vast experience that has allowed him to create successful opportunities in small business, regardless of these circumstances. He has extensive experience in the area of small business management in Canada and the USA. This stretches over an array of ventures from real estate, healthcare, manufacturing and retail business. Through these experiences, he has been fortunate to have a long history of successful collaborations across internal and external teams. |

Apr. 23, 2023 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Group Requirements: - We will be serving brunch at 11:30am - Maximum 12 people. This number ensures group members can maintain safe distancing while in the kitchen. - Masks must be worn at all times in the House (fun pattern non-medical masks are welcome). - Gloves and aprons will be provided and are to be worn while handling or serving food. - Closed toe shoes are to be worn in the kitchen at all times, please no sandals, socks, or bare feet - For the safety of house guests, group members are asked not to attend if they are sick or have had any illness symptoms within the 48 hours prior to service. Meal Requirements: - Brunch for 70 people is required - All leftovers must be individually packaged in House provided packaging. - Vegetarian options for 10-15 people are greatly appreciated. - Please consider that many of the meals will be individually packaged and stored in the fridge for families that return from the hospital later in the day. Please choose a menu that is suitable for packaging. Service: Under our current health and safety regulations, volunteers must serve the meal. Buffets are not permitted to minimize the number of people handling the same utensils. Brunch is to be served from 11:30am-12:00pm, following that all remaining food is to be individually packaged, labelled, and refrigerated. Clean-up: Groups are required to clean and sanitize all dishes they use as well as the kitchen space. This includes sweeping, removing the garbage and recycle, sanitizing all counter tops, and placing all used dish cloths and aprons in the laundry basket. Menu: Please let us know a general idea of what you plan to make 1 week prior to your meal, this allows us to put it on the family notification board. Ex. Mac & Cheese, roasted veggies, and lemon squares (a simple menu is all we need). Other Information: - The group is welcome to enjoy the meal they make, please ensure families have first priority at available seating. - Families may not be around until later in the day when the group is gone. Please do not worry if you do not see a lot of people for brunch. There is generally a second rush for meals when families return from the hospital, your leftovers will be enjoyed at that time (and greatly appreciated)! - You are welcome to interact with families. Please avoid personal questions and allow them to share only as much as they are comfortable in their current circumstance. - Photos are welcome, we only ask that you keep them of the group and avoid including family members. You can tag @rmhcalberta in your social media streams to share with us! - If you would like a tax receipt, please fill out the Jot form before end of visit. You will be able to attach your receipts to the completed form. - If you need to cancel service more than 1 week out, you can do so through your Volunteer Hub account. If within 1 week, please contact the House. Your meal will fill our families with food, and our House with much love. Thank you for your kind contribution to the Home for Dinner Program. |
