Project Amigo
Aug. 07, 2018 6:00 p.m.
Project Amigo supports students from Colima, Mexico so that they can create their own educational opportunities and better their quality of life. āTo do this, we remove the financial barriers to education through scholarships that include school fees, transportation, uniforms and school supplies, and a hot lunch. Our staff also provide tutoring and mentoring during Project Amigo Homework Club. Homework Clubs also provide us with a way of keeping in close touch with the students so we can identify problems before they become so severe that the student is forced to drop out of school. We also provide opportunities for volunteers from other countries to do valuable humanitarian service that creates and fosters friendship and understanding across cultures. Education and literacy are powerful tools to create a brighter future for the world’s children who in turn benefit the nations they live in. Since 1984, Project Amigo has worked with rural youth in Mexico to continue their formal schooling including university level. Project Amigo became a U.S. 501c3 non-profit charity in 1996, providing educational scholarships, material support, enrichment activities, and health care to disadvantaged youth in the state of Colima, Mexico. Volunteer Work Weeks based at our headquarters in the beautiful hillside village of Cofradía de Suchitlán allow volunteers from other countries to engage in humanitarian service and become both friends and sponsors of Mexican youth seeking the many advantages of education. The Stollery Women's Network
Aug. 14, 2018
Brianne will be speaking to our club about the Stollery Women’s Network (SWN). SWN started in 2014 with a small group of women who wanted to advocate for the Stollery Children’s Hospital’s patients and their families. Today they have a network of over 550 and continue to raise awareness and funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. Their current fundraising efforts go to our Giving Comfort campaign, which provides comfort items, such as t-shirts, blankets, toiletry kits and colouring books for patients and their families in the Stollery’s emergency room. This is the first type of program of its kind within the Stollery’s ER and last year they were able to raise $267,000. There are many ways to get involved with SWN, through volunteering at our educational booths, spreading our message on social media, attending our many fundraising events and of course donating to the Giving Comfort campaign. Veg in Yeg is a social enterprise currently based in Garneau, Edmonton. They use a vacant lot, courtesy of the St John's Institute, to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers for local consumption. They don't want anyone to miss out on this fresh, local goodness, so all of our products are priced as "pay what you want". You can find our produce stand, or order a customizable veg box for delivery (within University, Garneau, Strathcona, McKernan and Queen Alexandra neighbourhoods). About Nicole & Jorge: Nicole and Jorge are recent immigrants to Canada and adventuring companions. Nicole grew up in Manchester UK, and moved to Edmonton in 2015 to pursue a career as an academic research scientist. It was an awesome job, a dream of an experience, but in the end got a little burnt-out and decided to follow some other passions - sustainability, social good and building community. During her time in Edmonton, she has met many brilliant people who are advocates and activists for local and sustainable food systems. Feeling inspired to take backyard-gardening to the next level, she then met some urban farmers - including Ryan Mason of Reclaim Urban Farm, who farmed the same vacant lot in Garneau from 2014-2017. It just so happened that Ryan was relocating, so the plot opened up for Veg in Yeg. Jorge is from Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to Montreal 9 years ago to study a Master's in Engineering, before finding work at a small engineering firm in Edmonton. He is a mechanical engineer by day and an enthusiastic, devoted and supportive farm-hand by night. He loves soccer, rivers, kayaking, camping and making home-brew beer. Fun fact: you can see his smile from a mile away. Learn more about Nicole and Jorge by going to their Instagram and Facebook pages!
