In 2012, the social worker that failed to offer Sahar Shafia foster care testified at her parents’ and brother’s murder trial that she did so because Sahar “was not at risk”. She went on to ask “How could we know?” That is the question Paristi Project seeks to answer, more specifically: “What do help seeking victims know about their own circumstances that allow them to accurately predict their own murders while the social workers who seek to help them cannot?” Paristi Project seeks to move front-line helpers who triage family violence cases toward a demographically neutral definition of honour-based violence/black-sheep violence (BSV) so that the problem of honour-based violence is defined in terms of the socio-economic relationships between the perpetrators and their targets so that the following dynamic can be exposed: BSV can be modelled using game theory of a public goods game that allows the formation of multi-player coalitions. Apr. 30, 2019 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Ave is hosting a film screening - Bringing the Light - tells the inspiring story of how Melbourne resident, Rotarian and Peace Fellow, Stephanie Woollard started a social enterprise Seven Women and Hands On Development Tour company. It is a compelling story of how she met a group of seven disabled women while she was travelling through Nepal, who were struggling to survive by making and selling handicrafts from a tin shed in Kathmandu. Stephanie (second from left) decided to stay in Kathmandu for three extra weeks and out of her own pocket, funded training for these women in skills to grow their chances to create an income for themselves. This documentary brings light to the astounding results of fours years of work that this United Nations award winner and author has brought to over 5,000 women. Invite a friend! Share in discussion after the film on the importance of empowering women. Learn how you can join a proposed cultural trip to visit Seven Women Center in Nepal led by these amazing women. Learn how to Compost!
May 21, 2019 6:00 p.m.
Master Composter Nicole Spring from Veg in Yeg will be teaching us how to compost in our own backyards. In this class you will learn the important environmental benefits of composting, as well as the science of what composting is and the organisms behind it. If the weather is good we'll visit a community compost facility at the Veg In YEG Urban Farm. This is a typical outdoor compost pile set-up. She'll demonstrate how to build a pile, maintain it and turn/'fluff' it. Please wear outdoor shoes! She will also bring along my indoor worm composting bin and show you how to set up one of your own, teach you how to take care of worms (they are like pets), recommend places to source them, and basically convince you that you need some! Here is where her garden is located in Garneau: Plan B is to hold it at the Rooster Cafe & Kitchen if weather does not permit having the class outside. |

University of Alberta Community Engagement Consultation
Jun. 18, 2019 6:00 p.m.
Alexis Ksiaskiewicz Bio: Alexis leads institutional government and community relations strategies at the University of Alberta. Over the past fifteen years, she has held leadership roles within the advanced education sector in constituency organizations, advocacy groups, provincial and national associations, and at the University of Alberta. In her current role, she works to advance the university’s reputation and priorities with government and communities locally, provincially and nationally. Alexis is a proud Rotarian and an active volunteer. She is Chair of the Government Relations Officers’ Network for Canadian Universities (GRO Network) and a member of the Government Relations Institute of Canada (GRIC). She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Edmonton and the Board of Directors of Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS). She holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta and has earned a Certificate in Leading Strategic Change from Rotman School of Management. Event description: The University of Alberta holds community engagement as one of its core goals — to engage across disciplines, campuses, faculties, and units to create interdisciplinary learning experiences for our students, staff and faculty that prepare them to face the complex nature of today’s challenges and workplaces. Community engagement also means creating mutually beneficial learning experiences, research projects, partnerships, and collaborations with communities across our local campuses and extending out to our province, nation and world at large. It’s a key part of the university’s institutional strategic plan, For the Public Good. Beginning in September 2018, the university has embarked on a consultation process to gather input from internal and external community partners. Led by the Office of Government and Community Relations within University Relations, this work will span roughly twelve months. The consultation process includes a series of Table Tops events, Open Houses, and on-line engagement opportunities. On June 18, 2019 members of the Rotary Club Edmonton Whyte Avenue will be asked to take part in a Table Top consultation and provide opinions, share ideas, share expertise or experiences, identify concerns and help to explore or develop solutions regarding the university’s engagement with its community partners. Feedback from the consultations will be used as the basis for the development of a community engagement plan grounded in a community conversation. Ultimately, what we hear will directly guide how the University of Alberta delivers on the engagement goals of For the Public Good over the coming years. |
