As summer begins to wind down and we prepare for the fall, we are partnering with our friends at Cradles to Crayons to run a socially-distanced back to school collection drive! Crales to Crayons uses donations to create KidPacks that are hand-selected with care to meet a local boy or girl's specific needs and wants. They accept donations of a wide range of new and gently-used goods that are appropriate for use by children ages newborn to 12. At this time, Cradles to Crayons told us that they are most in needs of the following items:
All collection items may be dropped off at our official collection box, located at Rockwell's Neighborhood Grill located at 4632 N Rockwell, Chicago, IL 60625. Don't have a car or can't make it over to Rockwell's to donate? You can ship diapers, pull-ups and diaper wipes to Cradles to Crayones directly at 4141 W George Street, Chicago, IL 60641. Please note that all other items aside from diapers must be dropped off at Rockwell's due to limited capacity at the Cradles to Crayons warehouse! We will be running this drive for the duration of the month of August, so there's plenty of time for you to participate! If you have any questions at all about the collection drive, please don't hesitate to reach out to Kathleen or Alice! |

The Rotary Club of Chicago Lakeview is working to collect items for victims of the wildfires on the West Coast. There are almost 100 large wildfires that have burned more than 4.6 million acres in 10 states. Many have lost their homes and businesses. As people of action, Rotarians can assist those in need with donation of these critical items:
All items collected will be donated to a team of volunteers on the ground in the Ashland, Oregon area, where a fire began and burned down 3,000 acres south to the town of Medford. If you'd like to purchase any of the items above and ship them directly to save on our shipping costs (Amazon Prime, Walmart, etc.), please purchase and address items to: Thank you for your support. |

World Cleanup Day is coming up on Saturday, September 19th! This event is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem. On World CleanUp Day, volunteers worldwide will come together to free our planet from trash - cleaning up litter from our beaches, rivers, forests and streets. Last year, 21 million people in 180 different countries collected over 100,000 tons of waste during this event! This year, the Rotary Club of Chicago Lakeview is excited to be joining in on this awesome environmental service event! How can we participate? On Saturday, September 19th we're asking club members to each pick up just 5-10 pieces of litter that day. You can do this anywhere - your neighborhood, your local park, or even the lakefront! While we wish we could be together to participate this project, we encourage everyone to be socially distant and instead send in selfies of their hard work! We'd love to feature our CleanUp Day on our social media accounts! This event is a great way for us to do a COVID-19 safe service activity and we'd love to get as many participants as we can! There's no specific time commitment for World CleanUp Day and you can do it from any location! If you are interested in participating in this global CleanUp Day, please be sure to RSVP so we can track participation. Please feel free to reach out to Kathleen with any questions you may have! |

Invasive Quagga Mussels and Ecosystem Impact on Lake Michigan
Oct. 14, 2020 7:00 p.m.
Paris earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Samford University, a master’s degree in zoology from Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in evolution, ecology and organismal biology from the Ohio State University. Prior to coming to Purdue, he did post-doctoral research at the US Geological Survey and the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His research focuses on ecosystem dynamics in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Working in these large systems, Paris uses ecological and statistical models as tools to develop a mechanistic understanding about how anthropogenic and natural stressors impact ecosystem structure and function. This research is interdisciplinary by nature and gathering the data that inform these models requires collaborations with academic and agency personnel from across the basin. Current projects include identifying environmental factors that influence prey fish populations in Lakes Michigan and Huron, identifying sources of variation in the relationship between total phosphorus and chlorophyll concentrations in Lake Erie, determining the ecological effects of temporal and spatial variation of the deep chlorophyll maximum in Lake Ontario and exploring the spatial extent and ecological effects of hypoxia in Lake Erie. |

One of our most popular service events each year is our Night Ministry Meal Packing night, and this year we are bringing it back in a virtual environment! Join us on Wednesday, January 20th as we turn our club meeting into a virtual service event/social hour! During our meeting we'll be packing 100 meals for our pals at The Night Ministry! No speaker, no program - just service! Interested in participating in this service event? We are looking for 4-5 volunteers to help us virtually pack 100 sack meals. Depending on the number of people interested in volunteering, each volunteer will be responsible for grocery shopping for and packing 20-25 meals. Each meal will include the following: 1 sandwich, 1 bag of chips, 1 dessert/treat, fruit (we usually do clementines) and 1 bottle of water. For this project, we will each need to do our own grocery shopping, but we will work with Mark to get you reimbursed directly for any expenses you may incur! Once you register for this service event, we'll send out a more detailed email with further instructions. All meals must be dropped off at the Night Ministry's offices on Thursday, January 21st by 4pm at the latest. Their offices are located at: 1735 N Ashland Ave., Chicago, IL 60622 If you would like to volunteer to prepare meals, but don't have a car or are unable to drop off the food on 1/21, please let us know and we can work together to find a way to transport your meals. |
