Male Mogul Initiative
Mar. 06, 2019 7:00 p.m.
Join us as we hear from guest speaker Walter Mendenhall, founder of the Male Mogul Initiative. Walter was born in Chicago, Illinois. Despite being diagnosed with a learning disability at the age of 5, Walter overcame adversity to keep pace with the rest of his classmates and not fall behind in his studies. With the help of his mother and a series of education professionals, Walter successfully progressed through elementary and junior high and entered high school with his peers. While at Illinois he was a member of the football team and twice earned academic All-Big Ten honors. After graduating from University of Illinois, Walter played his last year of football at Illinois State University. He then transitioned into the National Football League (NFL) where he played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals. Having accomplished his lifelong dream of making it to the NFL, Walter’s desire for mentoring and teaching young people prompted him to walk away from football to focus on pursuing his passion for teaching the next generation of leaders. While pursuing his Master’s degree in Higher Education from National Louis University, he accepted a series of coaching and teaching positions at local high schools in the Chicago area, and began mentoring youth in partnership with various community organizations as well as via his own organization “Male Mogul Initiative.” Walter is a currently a P.H.D. candidate, Director of Teen programming and outreach at Circle Urban Ministries and a successful entrepreneur, mentor, and speaker. |

The Rotary Club of Chicago Lakeview is an official sponsor of the Secret Garden Gala, a formal event to benefit the Glenwood Sunday Market's food access program. The Secret Garden Gala promises to be an elegant formal affair featuring live music, delicious seasonal food, free-flowing refreshments, and surprises around every corner on the posh rooftop deck of the new Rogers Park Hampton Inn. Rogers Park is one of the most diverse communities in the country and serves as a port of entry for immigrants and refugees from across the globe. Approximately one in five residents experience food insecurity, meaning they don't know where their next meal is coming from. The Glenwood Sunday Market commits to serving neighbors in need through their Market For All initiative. Market For All provides matching micro-grants for shoppers using SNAP/Link (formerly food stamps) at the farmers market to triple people's food dollars at the market. This initiative helps neighbors in need afford fresh, local food while also supporting local small businesses, farmers and food artisans. Through generous donations, it has served over 150 individuals in 2018, giving away more than $20,000 for fresh produce and local food. Tickets can be purchased here: https://business.rpba.org/events/details/secret-garden-gala-6622 If you are attending, please register on our club website to allow us to track member attendance. Register on our site by May 8 to enter a raffle for free tickets for both the Garden Gala and VIP Cocktail Hour! Rooftop Terrace at Hampton Inn Chicago North at Loyola Station |

Hello Rotarians Our club will be partnering with Rise Against Hunger to package over 10,000 meals to be distributed globally to places in need. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 23 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf-life of two years. The event will be at the Nettelhorst School in Lakeview on June 15, 2019. The entire project will take place from 9 am until 2 pm, which includes three different shifts for helping. For the morning shift (9 am to 11 am) we will need 6-10 volunteers to help unload the food truck and set up for the packaging. After the set up, we will need the most amount of volunteers for the actual packaging process (11:00 am to 1:00 pm). Finally, we will need a few volunteers to stay behind after the packaging is complete to help break down and clean up (1:00 to 2:00 pm). Provided below is a link to the registration. Please select which shift or shifts work best for you. Friends and family members are welcome to join, but please complete a registration for each volunteer attending the event. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Nick Registration Link: https://forms.gle/

Our club will be volunteering at the Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory Warehouse to help provide local children with the basic essentials they need to thrive- at home, at school, and at play. Please register through this email. Once registered we will follow up with a link and code to register through the Cradles to Crayons website. Registration is open to both members and guests. *There's a limit of 10 volunteers, so register right away if you'd like to participate! We may be able to increase the limit if enough people register early. The Giving Factory is a warehouse environment. Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing they do not mind getting dirty. Volunteers work in stations to inspect, sort and package donations alongside other individuals and groups. The shift will begin with an orientation led by a Cradles to Crayons staff member and end with a wrap-up and an opportunity to learn the number of children impacted during our shift and to take group pictures. There have 33 parking spaces in front of the building that are first come, first serve - we encourage car pooling, if possible! Note that the parking lot is sectioned off from a large shipping and receiving complex. Pease do not drive beyond the concrete barricades separating the lot from the rest of the complex.
