PROGRAM THURSDAY-RON DOTZLER OF ABIDE

Ron and Twanny Dotzler- ABIDE

Our guest speaker will be Ron Dotzler with his wife Twany. Ron Dotzler and Twany Dotzler met in college in Missouri, were married in 1980 and have 14 children. For 8 years out of college Ron worked as a successful Chemical Engineer in the computer industry. In 1988 he and his family moved into the inner city community of north Omaha and founded Abide, a 501c3 non-profit. Ron is the founder and Board President of Abide. Ron and his family have worked with many people facing helpless, homeless and hopeless situations and their work has produced amazing inner city transformation. Ron has also done extensive travel developing leaders and working with organizations in India, China, Haiti, Africa (South Africa, Kenya, Sudan), Germany, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia (Macedonia), Argentina and Mexico.

Abide’s vision that one day Omaha, Nebraska would have no inner city will be achieved through the deliberate and consistent focus on our mission: To transform the inner city, one neighborhood at a time.

Our one-neighborhood-at-a-time strategy gets to the core of a successful community – the family. We recognize that resident stakeholders must participate in decisions to be able to get sustainable change to happen. Abide’s programs and community events help get the entire family engaged.

Abide uses a holistic approach that focuses on developing healthy neighborhoods through four main areas: Family Support, Community Building, Housing and Partnerships.

In the photo above, Ron shows a map showing a red dot for each murder in Omaha. His program works in the middle of the most dense murder area Members desiring more information can go to www.abideomaha.org for an expanded explanation.

(Ron and Twanny were our club speakers a year ago January and the above is a summary of that meeting. He may introduce subject areas entirely different)

PRESIDENT MIKE'S COMMENTS:

What is Rotary? We are over 1 million friends & neighbors that want to make the community, country and world better. We are a "service club" and whether our interest is in fighting polio, providing clean water, disaster relief, bicycles for kids, scholarships for graduates or something else, our focus is to help others. Our weekly club meetings are fun and together we make a difference in the world.

Paul P. Harris said "Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves."

Announcements/discussion:

Mike announced the passing of charter member Bud Polk.
The District Assembly will be held next Saturday in Lincoln.
Next Lunch Bunch meeting will be May 9th at Noon at Shevy’s
The Rotary Golf Outing, which provides the funding for the scholarships, is set for July 9^th at The Pines.Put together your fearsome foursome!

Presentation:

Gail introduced his daughter, Laura Anderson, Director of Ministry Engagement at Plymouth Covenant Church in Plymouth, MN. Laura shared her life journey, which has included several years in education, raising kids, and various ministerial callings.

Laura shared her recent experiences of working with the Light of Hope girl’s school in Kenya. After much contemplation, she made the trip there in January of 2017 and it has impacted Laura in great ways. Laura played a video that helped to show the school and the Kenyan youth that it serves.

Throughout the developing world, a girl may suffer from a litany of injustices that arise out of gender inequality. Child marriage, denial of education, gender-based violence – they limit her choices and trap her in the cycle of poverty.

That’s why we’re committed to empowering Kenyan girls and, in doing so, contributing to the global effort to end intergenerational poverty.

We do that by providing care, shelter, counseling, and education to the orphaned, abandoned, abused, and neglected Kenyan girls we serve. More importantly, we instill in them the belief that they have value, foster confidence in their leadership abilities, and give them the tools they need to reach their fullest potential.

In 2006, we welcomed seven girls to Light of Hope Home & School in Naivasha, Kenya.

Today, we serve more than 80 – and we’re continuing to grow.

Our mission:

Light of Hope is a home and school that provides Refuge, Restoration and Redirection for the lost and homeless girls of Kenya in a loving Christian environment.
