CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING - Meeting Agenda Item - President Roger Breed

Keith Rall has asked Vickie Backman, Executive of Omaha West Rotary Club,  to notify the Omaha Clubs that a planning meeting for Christmas Tree Recycling will be held on December 1st at 7:30 a.m. at the Cooperative Extension office, 8015 West Center Road in Omaha. Please notify the appropriate committee chairs and let me know if you will have a representative at the meeting.  If your club will not be helping with the Christmas Tree Recycling project please let me know so they can plan accordingly in regard to recycling locations.  Thank you.

Note:  Ta Ha Zouka Park has been used for Christmas Tree recycling in the past.  Maybe we could take a day or part of a day and help.

President Roger opened the meeting and called for an invocation by Jim Tomanek.  Paul Dritley was introduced as a possible future member, Visiting Rotarians were our old friend Larry Johansen of Downtown Rotary and Judy Cline of Suburban who was attending to announce the Omaha Metro Rotary Networking event in March. Jasmine introduced her mother Diane.  Treasurer Rita announced that the bank balance was $10,617 (rounded up by the Secretary a few quarters).   Secretary Ron thanked Jill for her excellent service in taking notes from the previous meeting and uploading them to the Club Runner web site for the bulletin.  Ron also mentioned the plethora of bicycles building up in his back deck area and we had a call from COPE for two bikes during the week which were delivered Friday morning the 13th.

Jim Tomanek announced the next Lunch Bunch meeting will be November 18th at Shevy’s Sports Grill. Our speaker will be Tricia Thomas with Companion Services.  The Service Philosophy of Companion Services is striving to replace institutional thinking, language and structures; and deliver its services to the aging, through natural supports, in natural settings.

BECKY KERN - NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

Becky is speaking to our Rotary Club in dual engagements.  Previous to today, she spoke to the lunch bunch at Shevy's a few weeks ago.  Becky opened her presentation with a slide  with a question, WHAT CHANNEL ARE YOU ON with an image of logos of  3 of our 4 major TV stations.  The purpose was to explain the strong ties between the National Weather Service in Valley to the area TV stations, in particular during severe weather.  The focus of NOAA is public safety with decision support services from the National Weather Service which is part of NOAA.

Becky discussed how important weather support services are during the College World Series with the large number of people exposed (to the weather wise guy!)  the NWS sends representatives to the City Command Center, when appropriate,  to be available for weather support services, which is not limited to storms because a hazmat situation could occur on nearby railroad tracks and the direction of the wind could be important in determining exposure risk to toxic fumes and vapors.

Becky showed us video clips of tornados, including the storm in Pilger two years ago.  She also showed a video clip from security camera inside the Henryville, Indiana school gymn which showed the falling overhead equipment and the roof of course. Rest rooms were suggested as student and staff shelters.  She concluded with comments on El Nino patterns for the coming winter.  She quoted probability of various types of winter weather resulting from the effects of El Nino patterns..  The forecast for the winter was provided by Becky but it has changed since last Thursday morning.

Becky recommended we contact the Bank President of Pilger for an interesting future speaker.

JUDY CLINE - Suburban rotary

Judy Cline visited our club to tell us about the METRO ROTARY NETWORKING EVENT, scheduled for Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Champion's Run at 4:30 PM.  Rotarians are welcome to purchase a display area to display their businesses products or services. Go  to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/omaha-metro-rotary-networking-event-tickets-19229991422?aff=es2 to get further details on the event.  Exhibition tables are available for $75 each.  During the evening, there will be 6 tablet giveaways.  (I am sure these are not BIG CHIEF writing tablets from elementary school, if they even exist).  Judy Cline can be reached at email:  judyrcline@yahoo.com
