WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello, Rotarians!
These notes are going to be a bit different than usual.  I want to strongly encourage each of you to make sure you have three legal documents:
  • Will
  • Medical power of attorney
  • Durable power of attorney

Without a will, when you die, the laws of the state where you reside will determine who inherits your assets.  If something happens to you and you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself, the only person who can make those decisions for you is the person you indicated in your medical power of attorney.  If you do not have that document, the medical professionals may consult your family, but they are not legally obligated to.  Likewise, you need to designate a person to make financial decisions for you in case you are unable to.  You do this with a durable power of attorney.

This is a gift you give to your family.  Otherwise, they will have to hire an attorney and go to court to get permission to take care of your medical and financial affairs.  They will also have to make reports to the court as long as the custodialship or guardianship is in place.
Judy

Judy introduced our speaker, Mary Scearcy, a Senior Living Consultant with Immanuel Communities.  Mary shared her message of the "loneliness epidemic" among the senior citizens in the U.S. and how it has become a true cause of accelerating heart disease and dementia for older adults.  She explained what Immanuel Communities are doing to help it's residents become more socialized and how they are creating communities of opportunities to thrive.  To learn more go to:  Immanuel.com/Lonelinessassessment
