PRESIDENT JUDY

Hello, Rotarians!

I hope everyone is planning on attending our Rotary scholarship breakfast this week on April 11th.  We have three amazing students to recognize and honor, as usual.

Speaking of youth, today I received an email from Tom Cardwell about RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership camp).  The camp was held this past weekend.  It was led by Emira Ibrahimpasic from Lincoln South Rotary and Kathy Reiger from Council Bluffs Noon Rotary.  Plus, there were many other Rotarians who helped.  A high school counselor for one of the students who attended wrote a note of thanks.  The student had come into her office on Monday “with the most positive outlook on life.”  The student said, “I just had the most amazing weekend of my life.”  The counselor went on to say that this student has had a difficult life.  She said, “I just want to say thank you to all of you involved for providing this amazing opportunity for our youth.”

What a great group we are part of!!!

MINUTES OF APR 4 MTG by Dan
WDC Rotary Club
Meeting Minutes 4/4/19
We were led in prayer and pledge by Steve Kucirek
We had 16 members present.
Treasurer’s report:  $2,230 present balance in general fund.  We have $725 in the special grants fund working towards the goal of $1,500
Announcements/discussion:
  • Next Thursday we will welcome our 3 scholarship recipients and their guests for our annual scholarship presentation breakfast.  Extra help to set up a bit early will be appreciated.  Rex has contacted HyVee for an enhanced breakfast offering and arranging for the additional head-count.
  • The motion was made to continue utilizing the Club Runner subscription for another year at the annual cost of $419.  This program has proven to be a very helpful tool for club communication.  The motion was seconded and passed.
  • The Rotary Scholarship Golf Outing is June 17th.  Hole sponsors play a major part in the fundraising effort. It’s never too early to solicit.
Presentation:
Neil introduced Ryan Pickett, assistant Director of Field Service, Boy Scouts of America, Mid-America Council.
Ryan has been with the BSA since the first of the year.  He explained much about the organization on a national level and broke down the Mid-America Council which serves the scouting needs in our area.  The MAC is comprised of 58 counties in Nebrasks, Iowa and South Dakota.  There are about 18,500 scouting youths in the MAC.  There are 30 full-time employees and 30 part-time employees in the MAC, which is headquartered in Omaha.  There are 12 districts within the MAC.
Ryan further shared statistics for the Elkhorn area.  In 2018 there were 414 boys enrolled in Cub Scouts which is 17% of the 2,400 “total available youth”.  In addition, there are 15 girls participating in the Elkhorn Cub Scout program.    There are 95 scouts in the older Boy Scout program in Elkhorn (ages 11-18).
