President's Message

Greetings Rotarians ...

As you are all aware, we won't be having our regular 7:00 AM meeting on Thursday.  We will be meeting at 2:00 PM at the Omaha Police Department's West Precinct headquarters, in order to present the "Ron Mortensen" bike to the OPD bicycle patrol.  The building is just west of the "Mark" bowling alley / sports facility.  Weather permitting, we will be outside.  Julie Mortensen will be joining us, to participate in the presentation. Please remember to wear your MASK ... even if we are outside.  October 24th is world-wide Polio Day ... we will be observing the event as part of our meeting next week (10/29).  If you get a chance, check out Rotary's "Zero-Polio Plus" video.  Diane and Rita will be providing a presentation (and breakfast) so come early!

Thanks!

Tod

SECRETARY REPORT
Below are the minutes from last week's meeting (October 15th)

WDC Rotary's in-person 7:00 AM meeting was held on October 15th with 14 members in attendance and Judy and Larry joining via ZOOM.
President Tod called the meeting to order.
Dave Rosacker provided our Opening Prayer and all joined in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Treasurer's Report:  Rita reported our account balance of $8,966.13 in the General Fund and $240.57 remaining in the Grant Fund
Grant Presentation: The presentation date of the bike was discussed.   We hope to be able to do so either on 10/22 or 10/29 in lieu of our regular meeting.  Gail had the Bike Masters shop professionally assemble the bike and shared pictures of the finished product complete with the Ron Mortensen commemorative message on the frame.
Public Relations: Jim will be working with the Salvation Army to get the club again on the bell ringing schedule at Family Fare (204th & Pacific) during the days leading up to Thanksgiving.
Scholarships: Mike reminded the club to save the date of 7/19/21 for the WDC Scholarship Golf fundraiser and to get that date out to others early and often.
Future Speakers:  11/5 John Fech, UNL Horticulturalist; 11/12 Colleen Fink, Championship Manager, US Senior Open Golf Tournament
Fines: Rolly subbed-in for Neil to collect fines

Presentation:
Mike introduced Mary Frazier-Meints, Executive Director of Youth Emergency Services of Omaha
Each night, hundreds of youth in the Omaha metro are homeless. Many of these youth have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused, making it unsafe for them to return home.  Many others are facing health, mental health, and substance abuse issues beyond their control. Without proper support and guidance, these vulnerable adolescents cannot succeed independently, and will likely fall into the cycle of homelessness as adults. Youth Emergency Services (YES) exists to help these youth turn their lives around.

Mary shared the story of Danielle, a young lady that YES has recently assisted.  See the story here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCLxNPLbA_I&t=4s
