SPEAKER FOR THURSDAY

Laura Anderson

Director of Ministry Engagement

Plymouth Covenant Church

Plymouth MN

Laura is married to Jay. They are parents to Ellie, a senior at UNL, and Grant a graduating high school senior currently playing hockey for the Omaha Lancers.

Laura spent her early career here in Omaha as an elementary teacher and guidance counselor in both Omaha and Millard Public Schools, before becoming a children’s ministry director.

After her family's move to Minnesota she continued working as a teacher and children’s ministry director. An opportunity to work with volunteers and helping assimilate newcomers came along at Plymouth Covenant. She currently works full time in Ministry Engagement.

As a full-time employee, she has the benefit of participating on mission trips to the global mission sites that partner with Plymouth Covenant.  After many years of saying “no” to traveling to a country that is less developed, on the other side of the globe, and completely different than any culture she had been exposed to, she decided to join the Light of Hope team and travel to Kenya. Laura left a piece of her heart at Light of Hope home and school for girls. She looks forward to making many trips back and providing much support to Light of Hope!

Laura is Peggy and Gail Stalder's daughter

Laura shared her recent experiences of working with the Light of Hope girl’s school in Kenya.  After much contemplation, she made the trip there in January of 2017 and it has impacted Laura in great ways.  Laura played a video that helped to show the school and the Kenyan youth that it serves.
From the Light of Hope website: https://lightofhopekenya.org
Throughout the developing world, a girl may suffer from a litany of injustices that arise out of gender inequality. Child marriage, denial of education, gender-based violence – they limit her choices and trap her in the cycle of poverty.
That’s why we’re committed to empowering Kenyan girls and, in doing so, contributing to the global effort to end intergenerational poverty.
We do that by providing care, shelter, counseling, and education to the orphaned, abandoned, abused, and neglected Kenyan girls we serve.  More importantly, we instill in them the belief that they have value, foster confidence in their leadership abilities, and give them the tools they need to reach their fullest potential.
In 2006, we welcomed seven girls to Light of Hope Home & School in Naivasha, Kenya.
Today, we serve more than 80 – and we’re continuing to grow.
Our mission:
Light of Hope is a home and school that provides Refuge, Restoration and Redirection for the lost and homeless girls of Kenya in a loving Christian environment.
