President Bob Worley opened the meeting and Jim Tomanek gave the invocation. Rita Kleeman gave the treasurer's report that there was a check book balance of $7,618.16. President Bob asked the members to provide information on any club projects we have done in the past few years for listing and presentation at the 25th Anniversary meeting on June 18th. There will be several District and Club officials in attendance, including the District Governor, Brian Moon. Lyn Ramsey, our founding club president will be in attendance as will Don Klein from the Omaha West Club who helped found our club. President will have a long list of introductions. Jim Tomanek reported on the LUNCH BUNCH meeting on Wednesday the 10th at Chevy's Restaurant in Elkhorn. The speaker was Mike Overman, co-publisher of the Douglas County Gazette who talked about their operations of print and on-line editions. There were 12 members in attendance, the speaker, and two guests; Jasmine Moats and former member Roger Bettmann. Ron Mortensen discussed the Club Runner project with the club, including the web site and the weekly bulletin. President Bob awarded Jasmine an official club badge with a classification of STUDENT. Joel Christensen - Joel is a native of North Dakota, graduated from North Dakota State University and came to work at Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) in Omaha in 1975. Joel is currently the Vice President for Water Operations at MUD and has served on several state wide councils and committees, including Nebraska Natural Resources Commission and Chair of Nebraska Governor's Advisory Council on water supply. Joel discussed the primary sources for Omaha's water treatment including the Florence plant, the Platte River Weste plant. and the Platte River plant located Southwest of Bellevue. Joel talked about the reliabilty of these primary sources of water in face of droughts and contamination. The presence of high levels of nitrates in some municipal water supplies presents a current challenge. indoor water conservation, water quality, Joel also discussed levels in the State of Nebraska and had a map of the state showing these levels. Also discussed were water uses and conservation in Omaha.
The June 18 meeting of our club will observe the 25th Anniversary of our club. Charter members will be honored and the Club will be honored by our founding club, Omaha West Rotary Club. Our first President Lyn Ramsey, Omaha West President Susan Thomas and Area Governor Madeline Madden plan to attend.. The District Governor Brian Moon and Rotarian Don Klein from Omaha West have been invited. Don Klein was one of our founding Rotarians from Omaha West. The program will consist of activities relating to our anniversary.
WDC Club Members have received a couple of bulletins and the website has been updated for changing events. This is a continuation of a trial run for the Club Runner software advocated by our District 5650 leaders. There a few "ghost" phrases that show up on the bottom of the bulletin and I haven't been able to find what is causing it. Help is on the way from Erin, the District executive so please be patient. Everyone that has a working email account should be receiving the bulletin. Suggestions for improvement are very, very welcome. Additionally, if you have events or stories you would like to bring to the attention of the members, drop me an email. Most of our stories should be Rotary or Elkhorn related but exceptions for major family events could be mentioned. I am still working on how to include photos when appropriate.
