SPEAKER FOR  MAY 16 - JOHN FECH
John Fech of the University of Nebraska Extension, a frequent annual speaker to our club will help us get ready for summer gardening and lawns activities.
PRESIDENT JUDY

In the most recent issue of The Rotarian magazine, there is a short article about a project a club in Maine worked on in India.  According to the article, one member of the club, Elias Thomas, went to India to help with immunization and decided they should do a service project while they were there.  They worked with Rotary clubs in the area and a water conservation trust to build catchment dams.  A local rural development foundation chooses the location near villages and farms to take advantage of dry riverbeds that fill up during the rainy monsoon seasons.  The dam creates a reservoir to hold water for the local residents to use during the dry season.

Now, previously barren areas are lush and green, thanks to ten dams.  The farmers are able to grow three crops instead of just one.  They use the first one to feed their family, the second to feed their livestock and the third to sell.

Kind of makes you proud to be a Rotarian!

Meeting Minutes 5/16/19
We were led in prayer and pledge by Dave Rosacker
We had 16 members present and welcomed Larry back as our guest
Treasurer’s report:  $3,724.72 was the balance in general fund.
Ken Melichar enlightened us with his member moment.
Announcements/discussion:
  • Neil reported that we can use help with future speakers.
  • Mike gave a status update on the Rotary Scholarship Golf Outing (to be held on June 17th).  About 20 members have purchased their raffle tickets, we have secured about 20 hole sponsors.  Golfers are needed!  Remember to supply Mike Ough with at least one item for the raffle/pin prize stash.
Presentation:
Neil introduced John Fech, a horticulturist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and certified arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.   John shared an immense amount of knowledge about trees and general lawn and landscape tips.  He talked about the Japanese Beatles invasion which is not an Asian tribute band.
