BOB FITZSIMMONS

This meeting of the Northwest Omaha Rotary Club honors BOB FITZSIMMONS, professional boxer.

Robert James Fitzsimmons was born May 26, 1863 in Helston, Cornwall, England. He is in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the lightest heavyweight champion ever. He was also the middleweight and light heavyweight world champion. The Ring magazine ranks him as the eighth hardest puncher of all time.

After an amateur career in England and New Zealand, he moved to Australia in 1863 where he became a successful professional and developed his own style. In 1890 he moved to the United States and won his first world championship in 1891 in New Orleans.  He had 125 official fights in his career, winning 89, 79 by knockouts. By 1897 he put on many exhibition fights, reportedly including a demonstration at the saloon of Judge Roy Bean in Langtry, Texas. He died in 1917 at the age of 54 as a result of the influenza outbreak.
