A group of professional musicians with seasoned roots is heading to Norfolk to “bring the light.”

That’s according to Josh Hoyer, frontman of Josh Hoyer and The Shadowboxers — a funk/soul/blues movement from Lincoln.

The band will be the featured entertainment at the final Music in the Park event on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Skyview Lake park. Musician Emily Bass will open the show, which begins at 6 p.m.

Hoyer is a well-known performer in the Midwest, as well as a session musician and arranger. He has previously worked with the groups Son of ’76 and the Watchmen, as well as with Electric Soul Method.

His work with The Shadowboxers includes songwriter, lead vocals, piano, organ and saxophone.

As a bandleader, Hoyer has won numerous local music awards and released four albums over the last nine years to critical acclaim. His bands have regularly played the big stages at area festivals and events. Hoyer has been described as oozing soul, and his current band is as hot as they come.

The Shadowboxers include some of the area’s most revered and accomplished musicians, many who have toured the country with large bands, teach music and play in back-up bands live and in the studio.

Members include Justin G. Jones on drums and vocals, Brian Morrow on bass and vocals, Benjamin Kushner on guitar and vocals, Tom Van Den Berg on trombone, Mike Dee on tenor saxophone and Logan Pennington on Latin percussion.

The band’s sound and passion come from their deep respect, knowledge of and passion for blues, Americana, soul, funk and many other styles of music.

The material to be performed in Norfolk is mostly Hoyer’s original work, as well as some choice covers that reflect his love of New Orleans music, soul and funk.

Attendees to Music in the Park are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on, a picnic and a favorite bottle of wine or beer. The event is family friendly and is presented by the Norfolk Rotary Club.
