We’re all familiar with Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.” But those words ask more of us than generosity in the moment. They call us to create opportunities that can change the direction of a life, and to invest in people who will carry the spirit of service far beyond a single project.
That’s why the service of our community’s high school students is so powerful.
As Chad Clements reminded us in last week’s Interact presentation, young people are not simply waiting to become leaders… they’re already learning to lead by identifying needs, working with others, and taking responsibility for improving their communities.
When students experience the responsibility and fulfillment of helping others, service becomes more than an activity on a calendar. It becomes part of who they are. They develop empathy, confidence, and a lasting sense of responsibility, qualities they can carry into their families, careers, and communities. Their example also invites classmates and future students to step forward, multiplying the reach of every act of service.
The impact does not end with the students who serve. A person receiving support may one day become the person who opens a door for someone else. In that way, service creates a continuing cycle… one person is strengthened, that person strengthens another, and a single moment of generosity grows into years of leadership, hope, and community renewal.
Our role, then, is not only to celebrate student service, but to support it. We can mentor students, listen to their ideas, connect them with community partners such as Rotary, and trust them with meaningful responsibility. When we do, we’re not merely helping them complete a project. We’re showing them their leadership matters and their contributions can shape the future of our shared community.
The true impact of service is measured not simply by what we give today, but by the opportunities we create, the leaders we help form, and the lives that will continue to change because someone chose to serve.
Thanks for all you do to make this possible!
