First and foremost thank you for all of the heartfelt messages. My family and I appreciate the support.
Second, thank you to Matt for stepping in last Monday. He has a busy week including 3 days in Kalamazoo for his PETS training. Matt I hope you enjoyed it and got as much out of it as I did.
With the successful completion of the Shamrockin’ event it is time for us to focus on the Roar. It is imperative that we put together a club wide best effort from all. The better this event comes together the better chance our successors have in continuing the tradition. Please find a way to make a contribution. Thank you.

Greetings Trenton Rotarians!
I just returned from the Great Lakes Rotary President Elect Training Seminar and all I can say is "Wow!" I can't tell you the last time I was with a group of people with so much energy, so much verve, so ready to take on the world! From the moment I walked into the Kalamazoo Radisson Hotel, I knew I was in for something special.
For those of you that don't know what Great Lakes Rotary PETS is, let me explain. First the easy part. The President Elect Training Seminar, or PETS, is a seminar to instruct Rotary Presidents Elect as to what their responsibilities may be and what they may expect during their year as Rotary President. Great Lakes Rotary PETS is a collaboration among six different Rotary Districts from the Great Lakes region, pooling resources to provide the best instruction possible. The districts included are District 6290, District 6310, District 6360, District 6380, District 6540 and our own Super District 6400.
The event started with "Rotary 101," a basic primer on Rotary International to give the Presidents Elect a chance to test their Rotary knowledge and get to know a few of the other attendees. The rest of the seminar was filled with instructional sessions on Membership, The Rotary Foundation, and Youth Services, as well as informative breakout meetings within the District on topics including working with members in the club, using DACdb and noticing cultural awareness in our community.
That's not to say that it was ALL meetings. There were many opportunities for fun and fellowship, where we were able to mingle with each other and exchange ideas.
The highlight of the seminar was the keynote address given by RI President Elect Mark Maloney on opening night. He mentioned two main ideas throughout his speech. One dealt with membership. Worldwide Rotary membership has been flat for the last several years and he wants us to make a concerted effort to invite new people and help grow our membership levels. His second, which will help with the first, was regarding family. Rotary should not be an obstacle to family life, but a way to enhance it. There will be times that Rotary business won't include the family. But we need to make an effort to include family as much as possible, including at club meetings. An interesting overall theme that seemed to run through his address, and actually encompasses the two main ideas, is that Rotary should be FUN! Although Rotary can be hard work, there is no reason not to enjoy it. We need to have more fellowship and socials, sharing good times with our family and friends. We also need to share our projects with our families. Everything is more enjoyable when we do it with the people that we love. What I REALLY liked about all of this is that it rolled into the theme that I have for our 2019 - 2020 Rotary. My plan has been to call my year as President "The Fun Year of Rotary!" Attending this seminar has shown me that I have chosen the right theme.
Speaking of themes, the theme selected by Rotary International President Mark Maloney for the 2019 - 2020 Rotary year is "Rotary Connects The World." Seeing what we accomplish locally, nationally and throughout the world shows that Rotary definitely connects the world. And our job this year is to make that connection stronger than ever. The theme of John Chambers, Governor of District 6400 for the 2019 - 2020 Rotary year is "Do The Right Thing." Following this theme will help strengthen our connections to each other and the world at large. And if we accomplish all of this, we will definitely have a "Fun Year of Rotary!"
I would like to leave you with a final thought . . . a quote I heard at GLRPETS:
If you wait "until,"
you can do everything for everybody
rather than something for somebody.
But you'll DO nothing for nobody.
Go out and "Be The Inspiration" as you show the world how to put "Service Above Self."
