Today’s newsletter is recognizing greatness from our past! Those that have facebook know there is a section that is called memories. Facebook pulls that day of history to our attention. And my memories of this week were bringing up one of our greatest events our club has held…. Roar On the River. The Roar was established way back in 1951. We have attached a flyer to this newletter if you would like to read more about its history.
Here are some of the most beautiful people in rotary that helped make that event a success year after year.
- Brad O’Connor, Bruce Diven and Fred Miller, all pivotal in the growth of the races, especially when it was moved to Elizabeth Park back around 2004.
- Fred Miller-The Founder of the Roar passed back in 2017, in an article i read it said, “Fred was the Race”-He was dynamic, energized and a pleasure to work with by many. His role was huge due to that it had to have Choreography moving from one type boat race to another. Back in the day he was a fierce competitor in the water as well. He was also influential in getting sponsors from back in the beginning.
- Because of his type leadership he brought in other great leaders like Bruce and Paul Jocks.
- Paul made a quote about Fred, ’Fred had many talents both on and off the water and was always willing to share and mentor others. I learned a lot working with Fred, but I’ll always remember his positive attitude, especially when working on problems.’ Jocks said, “ He believed there was always a solution and when a problem was resolved he always said, ”That one’s resolved, on to the Next!”
- Bruce and Paul Jocks for coordinating all aspects of the event, on site for a week, day and night. Set up, tear down and making sure drivers and sponsors were happy.
- Ronnie-for those Friday night parties. She poured out so much time and had amazing coordination to make this happen.
- Linda Francetich-getting volunteers and advertising
- Countless Rotarians that volunteered to work these events from the front gate to the beer tents. To setting up and tearing down.
- I also do not want to neglect our BIG sponsors, Meijer and PNC that helped us stay Afloat and bless our community with this great event.
Beautiful Memories! Let us remember what Fred said, “That one’s resolved, on to the next”
We had a great Walmart day, moving all the precious Walmart goods into the hands of the needy. We had a great turn out at Bill’s place. Bruce Wyke, Paulette Dillingham, Tom Dickman, Liesa Finazzo, Mao Huang, Emily Schnetzler and myself.

Our board did vote on sponsoring the Glow Roll that will be coming up this coming Saturday. Show your support to our community but also to Spencer Howey, who picked up the mantle of leadership to help this event be successful. The subcommittee of rotary, as Wendy Pate stated, “includes primarily Mike McCollough, Mark Angelotti, Sean McNally, Jake Cannon and Spencer Howey as the NEW SUB CHAIR.” Woo HOO and beautifully done.

Ronnie Ruelle - Imagining the engagement of members through several events that added more fun the year.
Gianni Di Poce - Imagining of leading a Satellite club that does service and builds friendships and leading it for two years in addition to his co-leadership of the Wild Game Dinner
