Welcome to our speaker for today, Trent Varva, of the Small Business Majority. He'll tell us about his group, a small business advocacy organization, founded and run by small business owners to focus on solving the biggest problems facing small businesses. Welcome, Trent!
Good job to Laurie Dixon, our Programs Chair, on filling our programs through July! Each year, the President Nominee takes on the role of "Programs Chair" for the calendar year preceding his/her year as president. It's an intimidating task when you look at filling 50 slots with interesting and informative programs. Between your own resources and suggestions and help from others, you manage to make it work. Laurie has completed 7 months and has just 5 more to go. Thanks, Laurie!
Board members, please remember we have our board meeting this Thursday at 7am at Mom's Restaurant. All club members are welcome to attend at any time, as long as you want to get up that early!
Remember that next Monday is Memorial Day so we won't be meeting for Rotary. This day honors those who have sacrificed their lives while serving in a branch of the country's armed services.
Sometimes just looking up and seeing the light is enough. ~Terri Guillemets
***May is Youth Services Month***
As Rotarians, we channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. The fifth Avenue of Service, Youth Service, recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), andRotary Youth Exchange.
Rotaract brings together young people ages 18-30 in universities and communities worldwide to organize service activities, develop their leadership and professional skills, and have fun. Rotary clubs sponsor them, but Rotaract club members manage and fund their clubs independently.
Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with other young people in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world. Interact clubs organize at least two service projects a year: one that benefits their community and one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.
RYLA is a leadership development program that is organized at the club, district, or multi-district level. The format of your event depends on what you hope to accomplish, your resources, and your audience – it could be a one-day seminar, a three-day retreat, or a weeklong camp.
Rotary Youth Exchange gives a young person the opportunity of a lifetime. Exposure to new cultures and customs is a powerful way to promote global understanding and peace. And it’s not just students who benefit – your Rotary club and host families will too.
