December 15, 2014

Today, we welcome the Trenton High School Choir.  We appreciate them taking time away from their busy day to come and sing some Christmas carols for us!

Whew, what a busy couple weeks we've had since our last meeting!  Our Wine, Women & Warmth event went very nicely with more than 25 people attending and more than 40 blankets made.  In addition to Rotarians and spouses from our own club, we had Rotarians from other clubs, such as Allen Park, Woodhaven/Brownstown and Detroit, including DG Liz!  We took some time to share some wine, food and fellowship as well.  We'll present the completed blankets to the Kids Talk program chair soon and hope that they'll bring comfort to some children.

We participated in the Trenton Christmas Parade on December 6th with five Rotarians covered in Christmas lights and carrying our Rotary banners.  We set out to Light Up Rotary and we think we did that!  Thanks to Wes Mator, Mark Angellotti, Jane Dunn and Matt Hatty for braving the cold that night.

The 27th Annual Wild Game Luncheon took place on December 10th.  We were pleased to have DG Liz Smith and her husband, Jamie, as well as DGE Wayne Titus and his wife, Lisa, attend the event.  Bill LeFevre was full of entertaining comments as usual!  Thank you to chairman, Bob Howey and his committee Mark Angellotti, Bob Haveman, John Howey, Skip Howey, Bill LeFevre, Dennis Levko, Jim Mans and John Martenson for another great event!

We rang the bell this weekend for the Salvation Army and we were lucky enough to have weather in the 40's this year.  Much different than last year during the Polor Vortex!  We look forward to hearing from Mark and Dan about how we did this year.  Larry Kearney and Paul Frost led the band around town on Friday night as well so they'll give us some results as well!

We ended the week with our Rotary Christmas Party on Friday.  We had a nice meal at Fratello's along with some good group conversations to make for an enjoyable evening!  We'll share more pictures in next week's newsletter.

Board members, please remember we have a board meeting at 7am this Thursday.  Thank you!

Have a good week!

Foundation Minute for December 15th from Regional Rotary Foundation Chair Neil McBeth

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people – children, families and entire communities – benefit from projects funded by The Rotary Foundation.  Its concentration is in six areas of focus:  promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies.
In this season of giving your $10 gift can provide bed nets to combat malaria in countries like Uganda and for a donation of $25, it can purchase the necessary school uniform which enables a child to attend school.  Your $50 gift can provide water filters that will combat deadly waterborne diseases in Guatemala, and $85 can purchase purple markers used to mark the pinkie fingers of children who have received the polio vaccine.  $100 can provide a sewing machine used to launch a business in India, and $250 gives mothers living in domestic violence shelters the means to bathe and care for their babies.
Rotary’s “Doing Good in the World” takes on many projects and tasks that make the world a better place.  Your contribution and support of The Rotary Foundation allows this to happen.
Thank you.  Wishing you peace and joy this holiday season and a happy, healthy, New Year.
