Meet club member Malak Taylor! She is a newer but very active member pitching in wherever she can. She has made all centerpieces for our fundraising events and hosted our blood drive this year. She is also leading the gate team at the Roar Onthe River at Elizabeth Park Saturday July 21, make sure to say hello! She also is the manager at Colors by Kim Hair Salon & Day Spa and does a fab job, give their page a like!

Living the theme

Dear fellow Rotarians,
For 60 years, choosing a theme has been the privilege, and sometimes the challenge, of each incoming president. Looking back on those past themes opens a small window into the thinking and the vision of each leader – how they saw Rotary, the place they saw for Rotary in the world and what they hoped Rotary would achieve.

When my turn came to choose a theme, I did not hesitate. I knew immediately that our theme in 2017-18 would be Rotary: Making a Difference. For me, that small phrase describes not only what we do now, but what we aspire to do. We want to make a difference. We strive to help, to have an impact, to make the world a bit better.

Over the past two years, I have seen so many ways that Rotary is doing just that. In California, after the devastating wildfires last year, I saw Rotarians Making a Difference to those who had lost everything. In Guatemala, I saw the difference that simple wood stoves are making in the lives of women who had been cooking on open fires: they no longer breathe smoke when they cook, they spend less time gathering firewood and they are using their stoves to start small businesses. In Israel, I visited a Rotary-supported hyperbaric centre that is helping brain injury and stroke patients return to healthy, productive lives. In communities around the world, Rotarians are Making a Difference by resettling refugees, immunising children, ensuring a safe blood supply and helping young people learn and thrive.

All over the world, I have been a part of Rotarians’ commitment to planting trees. As this issue goes to press, we are still awaiting the final count of trees planted, but I am delighted to announce that we have already far surpassed our original goal of 1.2 million trees – one new tree per Rotarian. And, all over the world, Rotary is continuing its advocacy, fundraising and support for polio eradication. Last year, wild poliovirus caused only 22 cases of paralysis in only two countries.

I am confident that soon that number will be zero, and we will begin a new phase in the timeline of eradication: counting down at least three years from the last sign of wild virus to the certification of a polio-free world.

As Juliet and I return home to Australia, we will bring warm memories of the places we have visited, the friends we have made and the service we have seen. Thank you, all of you, for the tremendous work you are doing, through Rotary: Making a Difference.

Would you like to contribute further to Rotary by serving on a committee? Each of Rotary's committees, made up of Rotarians and Rotaractors from around the world, works with the organization's leadership to ensure efficiency and promote the goals and priorities of the strategic plan.

The following committees are searching for qualified candidates for openings in 2019-20. All committees correspond via email, teleconference, or webinars as needed, and some involve at least one mandatory in-person meeting per year. Most committee business is conducted in English.

Function: Advises the Board of Directors on financial reports, internal and external auditing, and the system of internal control

Prerequisites: Independence, appropriate business experience, and demonstrated financial literacy in accounting, auditing, banking, insurance, investment, risk management, executive management, or audit governance

Commitment: One six-year term; two meetings per year in Evanston and two teleconference/webinar meetings per year

Function: Advises the Board on communication with key audiences

Prerequisites: Professional background and experience in a communications-related field

Commitment: One three-year term; multiple conference calls; annual meeting in Evanston

#Finance #committee

Function: Advises the Board on Rotary's finances, including budgets, investment policy, and sustainability measures

Prerequisites: Professional background in a finance-related field; nonprofit experience preferred. Candidates should have experience at the club and district level in financial matters.

Commitment: One three-year term; two meetings a year in Evanston

#Globalnetworkinggroups #committee

Function: Oversees action groups, fellowships, and vocational service, including operations, program enhancements, and proposals

Prerequisites: Strong candidates have led action groups, fellowships, or club- or district-level vocational service initiatives, and are familiar with their policies

Commitment: One three-year term; annual meeting in Evanston and two meetings by teleconference per year

#Jointcommittee on #partnerships

Function: Advises the Board and Trustees on partnership and sponsorship matters

Prerequisites: Knowledge of Rotary grant-making and international service portfolios; extensive experience in cultivating and developing partnerships with corporations, the NGO sector, and government; experience in cause marketing, sponsorship, and resource-generating relationships as well as international strategic partnerships; and clear understanding of the capacity and club-based projects of Rotary

Commitment: One three-year term; two meetings per year in Evanston

#Leadership #development and #training #committee

Function: Advises the Board on Rotary's leadership training program for Rotarians, clubs, and districts, with a special emphasis on training for district governors

Prerequisites: Must have significant training or education experience with a preference for leadership development

Commitment: One three-year term; annual meeting in Evanston

#Membership #committee

Function: Advises the Board on matters related to membership development, retention, and engagement

Prerequisites: Rotarian or Rotaractor with significant knowledge of and commitment to membership attraction and engagement activities; members of clubs that have diversified preferred

Commitment: One three-year term; two meetings per year in Evanston

#Operations #review #committee

Function: Monitors the effectiveness, efficiency, and implementation of operations and all internal systems, advises the Executive Committee on compensation matters, and performs other oversight functions as requested by the Board

Prerequisites: Experience in management, leadership development, or financial management, and a thorough knowledge of Rotary's operations. Appointments will be limited to past RI directors.

Commitment: One six-year term; typically meets in Evanston twice a year

#Rotaract and #Interact #committee

Function: Advises the Board on Interact and Rotaract; develops the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting program

Prerequisites Rotarians: Experience working with youth; direct experience as a mentor or Rotaract/Interact adviser or district chair. Youth program alumni are strong candidates.

Prerequisites Rotaractors: Leadership at the club, district, or international level. Strong candidates have served as a district Rotaract representative, organized projects, or attended a Rotaract Preconvention. Age restrictions may apply.

Commitment Rotarians: One three-year term; annual meeting in Evanston

Commitment Rotaractors: One one-year term; one meeting in Evanston

#Strategicplanningcommittee

Function: Reviews Rotary's strategic plan and associated measures; advises leadership on other matters of long-term significance

Prerequisites: 10+ years of experience in strategy development, monitoring, and implementation, and strong understanding of RI and Foundation programs and services

Commitment: One four-year term; up to four meetings in Evanston

#YouthExchangeCommittee

Function: Advises the Board on matters related to the Rotary Youth Exchange program and develops the program for the Youth Exchange Officers Preconvention

Prerequisites: Experience administering exchanges at district or multidistrict level; must be from a district that has met certification requirements

Commitment: Multiple teleconference/webinar meetings per year
