My Experience with the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Program
~by Kathy Kane

For anyone who has attended at District conference, you know that our
District friends (many from this club) know how to create an experience.
From the selection of the hotel to the programs and fellowship, it is
always an experience you will feel proud to share.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when we were invited to attend the Central
States Rotary Youth Exchange program in July, I just knew it included
staying in a dorm for the weekend at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.

The students stayed in one dorm and the parents another and all the
programs were located on the campus where we put on about 15,000 steps a
day attending various programs from one end of campus to another for
parents and Dustin attended programming geared to the many aspects of his
trip.

We arrived Friday afternoon and had sessions starting at 12:45 and
going until 11:00 pm and then again Saturday from 8:45 until 11:00 pm,
leaving after breakfast on Sunday morning.

It started with a wonderful presentation for all of the one thousand
participants by Dr. Dennis White who spoke about the exchange experience.
It addressed the various cycles an exchange student goes through as well as
what to expect from a student when they return.

Matt and I met with Dustin’s district 6400 contacts, the Travel agency,
enjoyed a presentation from Rotary International President Elect John Germ
of Tennessee., had a stress relief program, a meeting with our official
correspondent for Brazil, a “Confronting Ethnocentrism” seminar, an
inspiring keynote by Jennifer Jones who spoke about being brave, thinking
big and embracing opportunity and CSRYE Alumna Jennifer Cronkhite with her
wonderful exchange experience.  But  I suppose our favorite event was the
the “Speed Connection” where we were able to meet for five  minutes with
over ten students either on exchange here or back from exchange and we were
able to ask them questions.

We also enjoyed the daily interaction with other parents where we could get
advice on banking, what to pack, ideas for gifts, mail protocol  and other
matters specific to Brazil.

Bruce Goldsen was the Conference chairman and did a spectacular job all
weekend keeping the programming lively, entertaining and informative and
the last night they held a talent show that could rival any Fisher Theater
production. There were so many talented students who sang, danced and
painted and so much information to take in, it really helped Matt and I
have a much better handle on what to expect and how to prepare for this
journey with Dustin. As I said on my survey, “Thank you to all who
organized this wonderful ‪#‎csrye15 event. As a parent I feel so blessed to
be a part of this program and as a Rotarian so grateful to be part of this
wonderful and life changing organization. Thank you for the opportunities
for all these students.”

Visit to the Veterans Hospital on September 27
~by Michael Doyle

Trenton Rotarians

Attached is the website for the Veterans Hospital in Detroit. Please visit
the link near the bottom that says, donation needs list. This site is very
helpful in what we can and cannot take to the VA.

http://www.detroit.va.gov/giving/

I can tell you from personal experience this is one of the most fulfilling
things you can do with your time, giving time to veterans. Most of the
veterans just want to sit and talk with someone. Maybe play a game of
checkers or chess. Even a simple card time. The most important thing is
spending time with someone. Many have no family.

Where we need help;
1. Does someone or someone's company want to donate snatch bags that we
could put items in? That way we could hand each of the veterans a bag of
goods from the list above.
2. We plan to meet at the Westfield Center. Is there a
time or place we could meet prior to assemble the bags? See what donations
we have?
3. I plan to drive my son and myself. The reason, we do not want to hurry
out of the VA because a bus is leaving.

This is a very, very emotional visit. The reason we are going this time of
year is  the VA gets overwhelmed with donors around holidays. This will
mean much to veterans coming this time of year.
