This past Friday was our Park Hopping Event in Detroit. Bob and Kathy Paulbeck, Matt and Jackie Hatty, Bill and Paulette Dillingham and Rose Angela Gronda along with daughter Laura Lowrey and brother Carlo Marcantonio were the group that enjoyed a wonderful evening. We went to Hart Plaza, Campus Martius, Beacon Park, Capital Park, and Grand Circus Park. Detroit was amazingly filled with people all evening long. We had a tough time finding a dinner spot because of the crowds but ended up with a fun night at Punch Bowl Social. We have some pictures posted in the newsletter of this great summer evening.

Tuesday, August 13, 6:00-9:00 Taste of Downriver, Wyandotte – Let Ronnie Ruelle know if you would like to attend and we will have a group going to sample all the great restaurants in Wyandotte. Tickets are $25.00. Rotarians confirmed – Ronnie, Jean & Ed Wloszek, Paulette, Kathy, Jackie Hatty, Dale and Barb Malzahn. We will be meeting by the clock in Wyandotte at 6:00.
Thursday, August 29, 6:45 p.m. - Detroit Rolling Pub – We had a great time last year on the Detroit Rolling Pub so we'd like to try it again! We will embark on August 29, 6:45. The total cost of the trolley on a Thursday evening is $275 so the cost per person is $17 and the tour lasts 2 hours. You are responsible for bringing your own drinks and snacks. We will also make some quick stops at restaurants or bars along the route. We can meet at Westfield Center at 6:00 and carpool together for the drive to Detroit If we have more than 16 people interested, we'll look at a second trolley. We will have a sign up sheet going around on Monday to see if we have enough interest to reserve the trolley. We need to make a decision ASAP so please respond by Thursday, August 15th. Jennifer Whitteaker and her peers spoke about DTE's emergency preparedness plans last week.
Registration is now open for the 2020 Rotary Convention at Honolulu, Hawaii.
It was an exciting week in the Rotary world! It started out with Jennifer, Russ and Eddie from the DTE Emergency Preparedness Team letting us know how DTE gets ready for major events that may cause power outages. They have an in-house meteorologist who uses weather modeling programs to predict adverse weather, including high winds, days in advance of the event. This information is used to send people, trucks and equipment to areas that are expected to have adverse weather, well ahead of the storm. DTE is then able to immediately dispatch personnel to the site of downed wires and other areas of concern. I just want to know how I can get a copy of their weather app!
Then I received an email from Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney. He sent a link to a couple of videos developed to help ensure that all Rotary clubs remain in-the-know about the global fight to eradicate polio and Rotary's decades-long role in that effort. The week ended with several Rotarians and their families taking part in our "Park Hoppin' in the 'D'." We started at Campus Martius and ended at Punch Bowl Social, seeing many sites and parks along the way, including the waterfall in the Meridian Building (yes, IN the building), Capitol Park, site of the first state capitol of Michigan and the lobby of the Guardian Building with its beautiful Pewabic tiles. A great time was had by everyone who attended. Many thanks to Bob and Kathy Paulbeck for leading us in this most excellent adventure.
The week ahead will prove to be just as action packed. On Monday, District Governor John Chambers will make his official visit to our club and provide us with his vision for the year. Monday evening, we will have our August 5:01 Fellowship Gathering at 5:01 pm at Sibley Gardens. Afterwards, the Extendables will have their monthly meeting starting at 6:00 pm, with DG John visiting with that group as well. Tuesday evening is the SWCRC Taste of Downriver that many Rotarians plan on attending. Paul Jocks has presented us with an opportunity to attend a cross political dinner on Wednesday. The idea of the gathering is to create meaningful dialogue between people, not to change any minds, but to give everyone the chance to understand differing opinions. As a Peace Building club, this sounds like an excellent program to take part in. On Thursday, President-Elect Kathy Kane and District Governor Elect Noel Jackson will be guest bartenders at TV's Grand Event for a fundraiser to support Christ Net. Tip your bartenders well as they impress you with their creative concoctions, including Kathy's famous Nipper KoolAid! These events are wonderful ways to get to know your fellow Rotarians in a more casual way. Try to take part in them whenever possible.

Christnet Fundraiser
Christnet is holding a Guest Bartender night on Thursday, August 15, at TV’s Grand Event from 5 to 9 pm to raise money to complete the kitchen in their new building in Taylor. They hope to open the building this fall.
The guest bartenders our own Noel Jackson and Kathy Kane, Also Victor Stroia will be a guest bartender.
I hope Rotary will have a good presence as we have been a loyal Christnet supporter.

My name is Stan Gruzdaitis. I was born in Lithuania and came to the U.S,A. with my mother, who was born in Chicago. Therefore, I was an automatic U.S, citizen. My mother and I came to America in 1947 and my dad arrived a year later. We came to Detroit because my grandmother and aunt lived here.
I joined the Rotary because Bob Cole, who was with me in the Trenton Jaycees, asked me to join. It wasn’t hard for me to join because I enjoyed volunteering.
I attended several grade schools and Western High School and graduated in 1956. I then attended Detroit Tech.
My wife, Ellen, and I have been married since 1962. We have two daughters, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
I worked for Sears for 31 years. My wife worked for Frito-Lay in Management. We have lived in Trenton for 51 years.
I served as the President of Trenton Jaycees 1971 and have been in the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years.
We enjoy going to Casinos and going on cruises. We’ve been on about 10 cruises.
I have been a Rotarian for about 12 years.
