Raising over $50,000 just last year alone, the Trenton Educational Foundation is hosting its annual Signature Event for the fifth year as a benefit for the youth in the city.
Proceeds are used for student scholarships, to sponsor clubs in the Trenton Public Schools and to enable faculty members to undertake innovative classroom projects.
This year’s event is set to take place at the St. Paul Christian Life Center, 2550 Edsel, starting at 6 p.m. Nov. 20.
The foundation’s focus is to encourage excellence through creative teaching, facilitate student development and foster community/school partnerships.
Each year, city leaders, business association members, police and fire officials gather to raise funds benefiting students of the school district.
During the Signature Event, the Trenton Educational Foundation also awards three honorees who were selected as new members of the Trenton Hall of Fame. This year, the inductees are Andrew Greene, Carol Oakley and Ronald Sams.
The committee’s mission is to recognize individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the quality of education in the city. The hall of fame serves as a public thank you to the individuals selected and serves as a model for others to follow.
Greene, the first inductee for 2015, is a hockey player with the New Jersey Devils. He graduated from Trenton High School in 2001. During his time in high school, Greene played on the Trenton Trojans Class A State Ice Hockey Championship Team in 1998. Additionally, he played on the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association “All-State Dream Team” in 1999 and 2000 before being selected as the organization’s “Mr. Hockey” in 2000.
Oakley, the second inductee, has played a major role in the area of education in the city due to her service on the Board of Education from 1983 to 2012. During that time, Oakley was awarded the Soroptimist Woman of Distinction for Education Award in 1990 before being named Soroptimist of the Year in 1998. It is noted that she also served as a Girl Scout and Youth Group Leader, Sunday school teacher and Parent Teacher Organization president.
Sams rounds out the three inductees for 2015. He is a 1967 Trenton High School graduate, who has served the majority of his time in the Air Force since graduation. Sams has been a lieutenant general, director of Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance from 2002-06 and has received several distinguished medals for his dedication and excellence.
Following the ceremony, all three inductees will have plaques placed inside Trenton High School.
Tickets for the Signature Event are $50 each. Reserved seating sponsorships also are available. The Trenton Educational Foundation has tickets for sale at West Grange Pharmacy, 3390 West Road; Trenton City Hall, 2800 Third St.; the Board of Education office, 2603 Charlton Road; and Jackson, Snider & Parker, DDS, 254 West Road.
