Local pizza chain attempts to wipe out Polio

Three little words will help to eradicate the Polio virus when used at any Toarmina’s Pizza location from Oct. 19 to 23.

Any customer that orders a full price pizza and mentions “Pizza for Polio” will trigger an automatic $5 donation from the chain. That donation will then doubled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a total of $15 going to wipe out the disease.

“Many local Rotary Clubs are distributing cards to promote the fundraiser,” chain owner Lou Toarmina said. He is also the president of the Westland Rotary Club.

The chain is best known for it’s 24 inch pizza, which the company deemed “the biggest around.”

Pizza for Polio: Flat Rock, Grosse Ile Rotary Clubs plan fundraiser

Rotary International will hold a joint fundraiser in Flat Rock and Grosse Ile Township to help eradicate polio around the world.

October 20, 2014

I hope you enjoyed the weekend!  How about that Lions' win?

Welcome to our speaker today, Judge Michael McNally, who will give us an update on the 33rd District Court.

Another great Murder Mystery Dinner has come and gone!  It was an entertaining night, to say the least!  Please take a look at some of the pictures from the evening. Thanks to the wonderful cast and director!  Thank you to Noel and Debbie for the use of the Trenton Village Theater and all their planning, to Sandy Mull for the great meal and to the volunteers from PNC and Monroe Bank and Trust for their help throughout the night!  Thank you to the rest of the committee, Bill Jasman, Ronnie Ruelle and Jean Wloszek.  Yet another way to Light Up Rotary!

Thanks to Ronnie Ruelle and Jean Wloszek for attending Women in Rotary on Wednesday.  The lunch provided by the Detroit Athletic Club was wonderful and the speakers were informative.  We learned that Marilyn Fitzgerald, who helped to start Launch Detroit, is interviewing each participant in that program and monitoring the results to determine the success of the program.

Thanks to Noel Jackson, Bill Jasman and Valerie Dzagulones for attending the Membership/Foundation/PR/Interact Seminar on Thursday evening.  We obtained some helpful information and plan to put it to good use!

Thanks to all those who made a personal contribution to help the Rotary Club in Harper City, Liberia to fight the Ebola outbreak.  We raised $400!  Those funds will be forwarded to Margaret Williamson, Past President of the Rotary Club of Detroit, who will make sure the funds get put to good use.

World Polio Day is Friday, October 24th, and several local restaurants are donating funds to fight polio with each purchase made.  Please see the articles in this newsletter for participating restaurants and support our area clubs that coordinated these efforts for Pizza for Polio!

Please also support the fundraising efforts of the Interact Club on Sunday, October 26th by attending their Pancake Breakfast.  The event takes place from 9am to noon at the Westfield Activities Center.  Proceeds are used to fund the club's charitable projects throughout the school year.

Have a great week!

***October is Vocational Services Month***
Vocational Service adds value to all areas of Rotary Service by supporting the projects and work of the other service committees.  It does this by identifying ways in which the knowledge, skills and experience of Rotarians can be used to improve the outcomes of service projects.

We have an opportunity to help another club with some hands-on work this coming Saturday, October 25th!  Christina Vega of the Plymouth Noon Rotary club said her club and the Wayne club have been working to complete First Step's playground installation at their Wayne facility.  They will be doing a large landscape installation of plants and flowers and could use some volunteers.  If you're available to help out on Saturday, please let Rose Angela know so carpooling can be coordinated.  You can also contact Christina directly at (734-564-1548) if you have any questions.  Please consider helping out!

Foundation Minute from Regional Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Neil McBeth
Today’s headlines are filled with the dangers and consequent deaths of the Ebola epidemic in Africa.  Ted Turner (yes, I believe it is that Ted Turner – Chairman of Turner Enterprises and ex husband of Jane Fonda?) recently wrote an article entitled “Nigeria: No Letting Up Fight to End Polio.” He gives credit to the existing health efforts like the global polio eradication program, which, he states, “can be leveraged to fight a crisis like Ebola.  This is one of the great and lasting benefits of putting this type of infrastructure into place.”  Rotary’s effort to eradicate this dreaded disease has gone beyond what it set out to do and has become an example and a legacy in fighting sickness such as Ebola.

He goes on to say, “But we cannot praise the legacy of the polio program until it finishes the job it set out to do.  To accomplish this goal, Nigeria, which the last African country to report cases of polio, must not lose focus or momentum in its fight against polio. Nigerian leaders must double-down on their commitment to making polio a thing of the past.  Achieving the historic goal of a polio free Africa now depends on success in Nigeria.”

This year Nigeria has 6 cases, compared with 49 for the same period in 2013!

Your contribution to the Rotary Foundation’s PolioPlus program has enabled this happen.
