"The Ramblings of the Mad Hatter"
Greetings Trenton Rotarians!
"Sham-Rockin' On The River" week was every bit as exciting as I expected it to be. The week started with co-chairs Paulette Dillingham and Rose Angela Gronda giving the group an update at our Monday meeting. Tuesday evening found the committee putting the final touch on preparations and making plans to set up for Saturday's event.
"Sham-Rockin' On The River" wasn't the only thing going on this week, however. On Thursday, around twenty Trenton Rotarians, as well as dozens from around the District, headed to the Holiday Inn on Northline Road and I-75 at noon for the Southgate Rotary Club's annual "Meet the District Governor-Elect" event. This was District 6400's first introduction to our own Noel Jackson, the District Governor for the 2020 - 2021 Rotary year. I guess I should say, first OFFICIAL introduction. Noel has been extremely busy preparing for the upcoming year and has been pulling the whole District into his plans. DGE Noel gave a very moving and inspiring presentation to the Rotarians in attendance. From learning about humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in his "Weekly Reader" (yes, Noel, I too remember looking forward to that wealth of knowledge we received every week), to his and Debbie's induction into the Arch Klumph Society, to the advent of the "Friends of the Governor Society," Noel spoke about what Rotary has meant to him, how it has changed his life, and his hopes for this upcoming year and beyond. Noel will definitely leave his mark on District 6400 as well as the Rotary world. The club wishes you all the best, Noel. We're behind you 100%.
Thursday evening found several Trenton Rotarians in attendance at the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber's Black Tie Gala & Expo. As always, this event was attended by a "Who's Who" of area business people. We shared a booth with the Woodhaven-Brownstown, Southgate and Taylor Rotaries, gathering the names of potential members. We are extremely proud of Trenton Rotarian, Ronnie Ruelle, who is serving as the 2020 SWCRC Chairperson of the Board!
The "Sham-Rockin' On The River" committee was back together on Friday afternoon, decorating Smuggler's Run for Saturday evening's event. Many Rotarians were there, preparing the venue for the onslaught of attendees. When we left on Friday, the place was looking might fine. On Saturday morning and into the early afternoon, we finished decorating and displayed all of the auction items on the tables. By the time 6:00 pm rolled around, I could feel the excitement in the air. The venue was ready. The committee was ready. The guests were ready. The evening was a HUGE success! Laughter filled the air. Smiles were seen on every face. And a fantastic time was had by all. A big "shout out" goes to Paulette, Rose Angela and the rest of the "Sham-Rockin'" committee! Another job well done!
"Sham-Rockin' On The River" isn't the last event of this Rotary year, however. We're going to the Red Wings game on March 16th. We'll be reading to the Trenton third graders in a couple of weeks. And "Reading With Characters" is on March 21st. Also, May 2nd will be the Trenton Rotary "Piano Wars" at Biddle Hall. My wife Jackie will be looking for a few volunteers to help put this event together. Please see me if you would like to help or if you need more information.
I hope you have a wonderful week. Continue to "Do the Right Thing" and "Connect the World" with all of your actions. Be living examples of the Rotary motto "Service Above Self."
