Every Rotary Club has a story. It’s found not only in meeting minutes, old newsletter photos, grant requests, and event programs, but in the people who selflessly gave their time, the projects that strengthened the community, and the quiet acts of service that never made headlines.
When a community organization takes time to know its own history, it does more than look back. It reconnects with the values, friendships, and commitments that made its work meaningful in the first place.
Why do I choose to talk about this in my first newsletter message to you? I’m glad you asked!
One of the projects I plan on pursuing is to begin capturing the Rotary Club of Trenton’s rich history. This, as we know, is our 90th year. Not exactly the typical milestone, but if we start now, by the time our 100th anniversary rolls around, we’ll be well on our way.
Equally important, we’ll be honoring those who served before us.
History gives members a sense of belonging. New and longtime members alike are reminded that they’re part of something bigger than themselves. Remembering past leaders, projects, and milestones keeps gratitude at the heart of service.
History also helps guide the future. By understanding what’s mattered most over time, we can move forward with clearer purpose and renewed inspiration.

To know our history is not to live in the past. It’s carrying forward the best of what came before us, so that our service today becomes part of the story someone else will one day be proud to tell…
