TRIVIA NIGHT IS BACK!

Trivia Night is our next fellowship event coming up on Wednesday, January 22, 6:00, at Westfield Center. Get a team together or just come and we will put teams together at the event. Our last Trivia Night was lots of fun and lots of laughs for everyone. There is no charge to attend.

We will have homemade dinner by Ronnie Ruelle cooking sloppy joe's and Bill Jasman cooking turkey chili and there will also be a salad bar. If anyone would like to bring a dessert to pass feel free to do so. It will be a BYOB and we will provide cups, ice and wine bottle openers!

We hope everyone will join us! Spouses and significant others are welcome of course.

"The Ramblings of the Mad Hatter"

Greetings Trenton Rotarians!

What an exciting week in Rotary! It started at Monday's meeting, when Rob Bovitz explained to us how he became an accountant and then, in the Q&A, told us that the U.S. government is telling a nation who woefully under-saves that they will start having to empty a beneficiary IRA within ten years rather than have it last throughout their lives. Well, this last part is more infuriating than exciting, but they both get the blood pumping! Then on Monday evening, we held our January 5:01 meeting at Sibley Gardens. The attendance was lighter than usual, probably because there was no 6:01 Group meeting that evening. But those who came had a wonderful time of fun and fellowship.

Speaking of the 6:01 Group, they held their meeting on Thursday evening at the new Little Caesars office building downtown. What a beautiful building! A big "Thank you!" goes out to Scott Haveman for agreeing to host the group. Some exciting news came out of this meeting. The 6:01 Group is sponsoring a couple of fun/fund raising events over the next few months! At these outings, people will support the Trenton Rotary while having a great time! Stay tuned as the details start to unfold.

Join us this Monday, as Jim Perri from the Downriver Community Conference tells us how the DCC enhances the lives of all people Downriver. We will also be honoring Jim with a Peach Chain Link Award for his dedication to this worthy group.

I hope that you have a wonderful week as our beautiful community finally looks like the winter wonderland that it is. Do the right thing by helping those affected by this bitter cold and snow. Connect the world through your positive actions. And continue to live the Rotary motto "Service Above Self!"

Rotary themes

Each January, Rotary members enthusiastically await the incoming Rotary International president’s announcement of the next Rotary theme. The president announces the theme at the International Assembly, an annual training event for incoming leaders.

The tradition of crafting a theme is credited to Percy C. Hodgson, Rotary’s president in 1949-50. When Hodgson addressed the International Assembly in 1949, he impressed upon the incoming leaders that they had a “glorious opportunity to impart Rotary knowledge” and that “lack of Rotary knowledge can be a deterrent to the successful operation of a Rotary club.” Hodgson’s 83-word theme, which included a list of four objectives, was substantially longer than today’s punchier themes, but it captured his hope that incoming leaders have essential knowledge of Rotary.

Rotarians’ desire to celebrate and support their president’s annual program of service has continued. Other early themes include Rotary Is Hope in Action (Joaquin Serratosa Cibils, 1953-54), Kindle the Spark Within (Nitish C. Laharry, 1962-63), and Good Will Begins With You (Ernst G. Breitholtz, 1971-72).

In the decades that followed, RI presidents introduced theme logos, lapel pins, ties, and scarves. Theme ties were introduced in the 1990s, and are now crafted annually. Scarves first appeared in 1998-99. Many designs incorporate the theme logo for the year. Others, such as those selected by William Boyd from New Zealand and Sakuji Tanaka from Japan, use colors or imagery that reflects their home country.
