A Fun Fact

Fun fact: On January 1, Rotary again had a float in the Rose Parade. This marks the 40th consecutive year of a Rotary entry, unfortunately this year (after two straight years of winning the Princess Trophy) Rotary did not win a trophy. The Parade theme was “The Melody of Life.” The theme of the Rotary float was “Service Rocks.” The Float showcased a whimsical crocodile playing a piano to the tune of Crocodile Rock. Interactors joined Rotarians in putting hours of labor into decorating the float.
It should also be noted that not one penny of the funds of Rotary International or the Rotary Foundation are spent on the float. The success of the float is a tribute to the dedication of the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee whose efforts, are supported entirely by voluntary contributions from Rotary districts, clubs and individuals across the United States and Canada
Arch Klumpf, the founder of The Rotary Foundation said, “We should not live for ourselves alone, but for the joy in doing good for others.” Over 1.2 million Rotarians follow that direction every day, and indeed Service Rocks.

DGN Noel Jackson is part of a large group changing lives in Ghana. He and eighteen other Rotarians are taking 53 hockey bags filled with medical and dental supplies. As in the past, they will provide professional services as part of this trip. Fellow District 6400 Rotarian Kim Spirou has even bigger plans as an assessment is under way for a medical and dental clinic expansion. Keep this crew in your prayers for safe travels.

Kathy, Matt and the committee are hard at work making sure our second major fundraiser is a hit. Please order tickets and help out where you can.
For those who are so inclined our Roar Committee has a number of openings that must be filled. Our ability to provide this community service event needs your help. Please commit as soon as possible as the race organizer is looking for a sizable deposit. We cannot do this without a tremendous team effort. "Sham-Rockin' on the River"
"Sham-Rockin' on the River" is a couple months away but it will be here before you know it! The event is being held at Smugglers Run in Wyandotte on Biddle Ave, just behind the Speedboat Bar on Saturday, March 9th. It will be a fun St Patrick's Day theme with Irish food and drink, auctions, raffles and fun activities to keep the guests entertained! Please help out in some way whether it's a sponsorship, a donation to the auction, volunteering to work a shift or buying a table and bringing some friends. Co-Chairs Kathy Kane and Matt Hatty and their committee are working hard and with the luck of the Irish, AND YOUR HELP, the event will be a Sham-Rockin' success!

Clubs reap benefits from flexibility options
2019-20 Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney is urging leaders to grow Rotary by creating new Rotary and Rotaract clubs that take advantage of innovative membership models.
In his speech to incoming leaders at the annual training event in San Diego, California, USA, Monday, Maloney said “The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more."
During the 2016 Council on Legislation, delegates voted to give Rotary clubs more freedom to decide when, where, and how they meet and the types of membership they offer. Clubs that have taken advantage of the new club flexibility options have reported increased membership; greater diversity in age, professions, and experience; and more engaged members.
Here are some of the ways clubs are staying relevant in their communities.
FLEXIBLE MEETINGS
Rotary Club of Singapore East, Singapore)
The Rotary Club of Singapore East replaced two of its monthly meetings with less formal gatherings focusing on service projects and fellowship.
These new meetings give Rotaractors and family members the chance to get involved while keeping costs down for the club’s younger members.
REDUCED DUES
(Rotary Club of Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., USA)
Quentin Wodon, president of the club, helped double its membership in six months by adopting a number of changes. One involved adding two new membership categories: one for young professionals, 35 and under, at half the regular dues, and one for spouses or partners, at one-third the cost.
The club grew from 18 to 36 members and has since reduced its regular dues as well, says Wodon, author of the Rotarian Economist blog.
CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP
(Rotary Club of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)
Corporate memberships give busy executives the chance to get involved in club projects and activities without committing to regular weekly meetings. The club has 17 corporate members, from six businesses, who take turns attending the club’s meetings.
Robert Fisher, the club’s corporate membership chair, says corporate members have given the club access to professional networks and helped expand its expertise. “We believe we can have a significantly greater impact with their involvement,” says Fisher.
