January 19, 2015

Welcome to our speaker for today, our own Roy Vreeland!  He's going to talk to us about fitness and health.  We're looking forward to it, Roy!

Today is Martin Luther King Day.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"  As Rotarians, we are of a similar mindset and ask the same question.  We value service to others and look for ways to help where we can.  Let's keep the "Service Above Self" motto in mind even more today as we celebrate this holiday.

Speaking of service, please plan to come to Trenton High School by 9am this Saturday, ready to pack meals with THS Interactors and students.  The students will arrive at 8am to load all the food products and necessary equipment and they'll be ready to begin packing at 9am.  With around 100 students, and several Rotarians, the work will be done in about an hour and a half!  That's 10,000 meals that are used both locally and in other parts of the world.  Not too bad for a couple hours on a Saturday morning.  Please come and support a worthy cause!

We're making progress on the Winter Beach Blast!  We'd like to ask that each Rotarian bring in a bottle of wine or other spirits for our "Bucket of Cheer".  This makes for a nice little part of our fundraiser so we'd greatly appreciate whatever you can contribute.  Also, any auction items would be helpful, such as sporting event tickets, gift cards or another idea we may not have considered!  Please bring these items during the next couple meetings in January and place them on the dessert table.  Thank you!

Minutes from the December 18, 2014 board meeting are included in this newsletter.  Click on the link to view the document and see what actions and discussions took place at this meeting.

On February 2nd, along with the TBA, we'll host our annual State of the City Address featuring Mayor Kyle Stack.  Please remember that meeting starts at 11:30am and generally ends around 1:00pm.  This is considered a regular meeting for us but if you'd like to bring guests at $10 each, please let Kathy Kane know prior to February 2nd.

Have a good week!

Avenues of Service

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

  • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
  • Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in  and the .
  • Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in and this .
  • International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
  • Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as , , , and .

Kids Against Hunger - Saturday, January 24th
This is the third year that Trenton Rotarians and Trenton High School Interactors will get together to pack nutritious meals for those less fortunate.  Rotarians are asked to be at Trenton High School by 9am.  Generally, 100 Interact students are there to pack meals so with the help of several Rotarians, 10,000 meals can be packed in just a couple hours!  Please see Noel Jackson, Bill Jasman or Mike Doyle for more information.

Turn Off the Violence - Saturday, February 7th
Please plan to attend the Turn Off the Violence event where we show kids fun alternatives to violent TV shows, movies and video games.  This event is being chaired by Jeff Evans and Val Dzagulones.  Please make sure to let them know if you can help.

Arthurs Middle School Career Day - Friday, February 20th
Arthurs Middle School is once again hosting their annual Career Day on February 20, 2015.  They are looking for enthusiastic speakers!  If you're interested, please contact Debbie Rhoades via email at Rhoadesd@trentonschools.com.

Winter Beach Blast - Saturday, February 21st
This is our biggest fundraiser and supports many of our worthy causes to which we donate.  If you have sporting event tickets or tickets to a show that you'd like to donate for auctions and/or raffles, please let Rose Angela know!  Please let Kathy Kane know of any suggestions for potential sponsors.  Chairperson Sandy Mull will keep us informed of the progress made as we get to work!

Job Shadowing / Mentoring

Stacey Marcum is the new Career Center Specialist at Trenton High School and would like to expand job shadowing opportunities for students.  Stacey would like to have a "go-to" list of employers that would be willing to host a student for a day.  There may also be an opportunity for individually mentoring a student as well.  A sign up list will be going around today at Rotary and if you're interested, please sign up.  If you have additional questions, please contact Stacey directly at marcums@trentonschools.com or 734-692-4530.
