First things first: today's meeting is relocated to the Trenton Village Theater (DYPAC) at 2447 West Jefferson in Trenton. Unfortunately, there were some frozen pipes that burst at Westfield and they have some flooding there. I hope things aren't too bad and the cleanup is easy for them. Thank you to Noel for offering up their theather for today's meeting!
Welcome to the Trenton High School Rowing Crew! Today we'll hear about the plans for the first season of rowing in Trenton.
Job well done to Mayor Stack and her staff at last week's State of the City Address! It was a nice presentation with each of the department heads sharing accomplishments for the past year and plans for the coming year. Congratulations to Paul Harris Fellow Award recipients Jim Wilson and Terry Teifer and Service above Self Award recipient Chad Clements! Way to go to Laurie and Joe Dixon with Savannah's as winner of the TBA Business of the Year Award! All well deserved!
RI President Huang had encouraged Rotary clubs to host a "Rotary Day" highlighting what Rotary does and to share it with the community. We decided to combine "Rotary Day" with the State of the City Address so we presented the completed Little Free Library, thanks to Paul Frost and Jane Dunn, to the City of Trenton. The library has been installed at North McLouth Park and has books in it. Whether any brave soul is out in the park to pick up a book right now is another question but as soon as they're ready, the books will be there! We also presented a defibrillator to Trenton City Hall to finish out Kyle's plans from her year when she provided these devices at each of the public schools in Trenton. It will be installed at city hall and available to residents as well as city employees. The library focuses on literacy and the defibrillator is aimed towards health and wellness. We reached the immediate audience at the event as well as those watching later via cable TV. In addition, an article will be published in the Trenton Trib sharing this information. It's a small part of what we do but I think it will reach some people who will learn a bit more about us!
The 8th Annual Winter Beach Blast is five days away! Many of our sponsors from past years are supporting the event again and we’re gathering a nice list of both silent auction items and Super Silent auction items for the event. Chairperson Sandy Mull is keeping the committee on task! Please let us know if you have an auction item you’d like to offer! We are still accepting bottles of wine or cheer for our “Bucket of Cheer” raffle. We’ve also got our “Coconut Cash” reverse raffle tickets for sale. Make sure to get yours before they’re sold out!
Personal trainer, and Trenton Rotarian, Roy Vreeland held the second of two sessions on fitness this past Saturday. Roy helped us to raise $1,700 for the club with his generous donation of his time! Thanks, Roy! We'll be talking about having another two sessions for those of you who wanted to attend but couldn't make this past 2-day session. Stay tuned!
We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light - Evelyn Dunbar

Reading with the Characters - Saturday, March 14th
We'll be teaming up with DYPAC again this year to host Reading with the Characters! Please let Matt Hatty or Noel Jackson know if you'd like to dress as a character and read a story to the kids. It's really fun and I think any of the readers will say they feel pretty important when the kids come up and want their autograph!
***February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month***
In 2001 the United Nations designated September 21st as an annual International Day of World Peace "to be observed as a day of global cease fire and nonviolence" according to a General Assembly resolution. The day's devotion to peace connects closely with what Rotary members have been fostering since The Rotary Foundation's mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace, was proclaimed in 1917.
Rotary's goal of worldwide peace and tolerance has been an unwavering pursuit: conducting global forums, hosting international peace symposiums, advancing peace through its 60-year collaboration with the UN, as well as grassroots initiatives such as the Rotarian Action Group for Peace.
But Rotary's most significant effort to wage peace is the Rotary Peace Centers program, established in 2002. Each year, the program trains some of the world's most dedicated and brightest professionals, preparing them to promote national and international cooperation and to resolve conflict. They include graduates of a two-year master's degree program and a three-month professional certificate program at Rotary's partner universities.
Today, more than 900 peace fellows are applying their expertise in various fields. They're settling border conflicts in West Africa, developing aid programs at the World Bank, drafting legislation to protect exploited children in Brazil, providing security for U.S. diplomats, and many other career paths devoted to peace.
The Trenton Rotary Club sponsored Michelle Aldridge as a peace fellow and she's finishing up her program later this year. She has been in Japan and came to visit our club last September to provide us with an update. Here's is a summary of that update:
"This year has been busy for the Rotary Peace Fellows at ICU. In March I spent my spring break between quarters in the Philippines volunteering with the relief efforts after Typhoon Yolanda. The Rotary Club of Ormoc has a project there and I volunteered with an organization called All Hands on this project as well as some others around the area of Ormoc and Kananga. When I returned the Rotary Peace Fellows went on a class trip to Hiroshima sponsored by Rotary. It was a life-changing experience to meet with hibakusha (atomic bombing survivors) and hear their stories. It reaffirms my commitment to work for peace. I am very thankful to the Rotary Club at home and in Japan for providing such an educational experience."
