Hello Trenton Rotarians!

 

It was another adventurous week in the world of Rotary. Although Monday's speaker had to cancel due to a family emergency, it was still a fun and informative meeting. We heard Trenton Rotary's cyber security expert, Chris Sorensen, who will be hosting a series of seminars during the Cyber Security Month of October. These seminars will instruct us as to how to protect ourselves in a digital and on-line world. Although geared toward senior citizens, who seem to be most vulnerable, these presentations will be beneficial to all who attend. Stay tuned as more details are presented. We also found out that the Rotary Halloween Hayride is set for Sunday, October 27th at Westcroft Gardens on Grosse Ile. Space IS limited, so be sure to sign up early. I mentioned that our Rotary "Be The Match" bone marrow drive is scheduled for November 16 at the Westfield Center in conjunction with the Livonia Rotary, who will hold their drive at Burn Fitness In Livonia. Finally, I excitedly indicated that we WILL be taking part in regular reading sessions with the elementary students in Trenton. I will be sending you information on how to take part. I realize that it will be a big commitment, but please consider this worthwhile project, which will help at-risk students with their literacy skills.

Monday evening saw another successful 5:01 Meeting, as well as the September gathering of the Extendables. Speaking of the Extendables, someone from the group is scheduled to come in Monday to give us an update of what the evening group has planned.

Several Rotarians showed up at the home of John and Laura Howey on Thursday evening for our annual fellowship barbeque. Burgers and dogs were grilled, beverages flowed, unbelievable treats were shared and great conversations were had by all. It is ALWAYS a fantastic time when Trenton Rotarians get together. I want to thank John and Laura Howey for graciously allowing us to gather in their home for this truly special event.

Although not a Trenton Rotary sponsored event, several Rotarians were spotted at the high school football field for Trenton High School's 10th Annual Victory Day. This heart-warming event gives cognitively and physically impaired children an opportunity to have their moment in the sun. Congratulations and thank you to THS Defensive Coordinator Aaron Segedi for bringing this great event to Trenton and helping local student athletes learn what it means to put "Service Above Self."

As mentioned, we will hear from the Trenton Rotary P.M. group at this Monday's meeting. We will also be collecting donations for the relief efforts in the Bahamas. If you have not already done so, or even if you have, please considering giving to help those in who need it most.

Finally, I would like to say "Thank you" to Club Secretary Bill Jasman. He has been sending out a regularly updated schedule of club events. As we finish the last week of summer, let's make it our goal to look at this schedule and take part in as many events as possible. By doing so, we will truly connect the world as we do the right thing. We saw a fine example of "Service Above Self" at Victory Day. Let each and every one of us be another example for the world.
