Happy Monday! I hope you all enjoyed the Easter holiday.
Welcome to our speaker for today, Sharon Claye, who will talk to the group about fall prevention. Thank you for being here!
The "Girls Got Wine" committee will continue to meet on Mondays right after our Rotary lunch meeting for 15 to 20 minutes until the event on May 6th. Please stay if you can.
Welcome back to the Nicaragua Dental Mission Team! They made it back safely late Tuesday night. It sounds like another successful trip and we look forward to hearing more about it!
If you've never been to District Conference and you're still considering it, don't forget the offer we made back in August when DG Liz Smith made her visit. The club will pay for your registration! It's not too late to sign up so please keep this in mind!
Keep your flame lit, and you will never feel darkness. - J. Parker
***April is Maternal and Child Health Month***
From the RI website: Our members improve access to essential medical services for mothers and their children. These efforts are aimed at reducing the number of children under age five who die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation – a figure that is currently estimated at 7 million.
According to another estimate, more than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. Our members provide education, immunizations, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
The Rochester Deaf Rotary Club was formally chartered in 2004, in Rochester, New York. It exists, according to its mission statement, “to promote the life, welfare and education of the deaf and hard-of-hearing people of all ages through direct service, as well as to advance deaf awareness within the community, and around the world as opportunities arise.” It is the first deaf Rotary club in the world to be run by the deaf for the deaf. It has a total membership of 24.
Working with the Erenkov Rotary Club in Instanbul, Turkey, the Rochester Deaf Rotary Club is presently taken on a challenge of supplying hearing aids and evaluations for 75 children in Turkey through a global grant. This is a fitting project for its members. It is their second international project and they are looking forward to its success. With matching funds from the Rotary Foundation and several fundraisers the project will materialize.
Your contribution to the Rotary Foundation supplies matching funds for such projects. Thank you for your generosity! -- provided by PDG Mary Kehoe
Friendship Program Opportunity
Penny Oglesby from the Dearborn Heights Rotary Club has arranged for a Friendship Exchange with Rotarians from Nigeria for District 6400. The Friendship Exchange Program (RFE) is a Rotary International program for Rotarians and their spouses or significant others that provides participants with the opportunity to experience other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians, visiting their clubs and participating in the life-style/activities of their communities. If you're interested in hosting opportunities this May, please click on the downloaded file in this newsletter titled "Friendship Exchange" to access the flyer for more information.
