I hope everyone enjoyed a nice Mother's Day weekend!

Wow, it's been a busy week!  We had Girls Got Wine on Wednesday evening, several of us attended the Taylor Rotary "Sweet Charities" event on Thursday and then Shred Day was Saturday afternoon!

Thank you to Val Dzagulones for chairing our Girls Got Wine event on Wednesday evening.  She really put her heart and soul into this one!  It was a nice event with handsome men in suits and tuxes serving up food and drinks to our guests.  Those in attendance could visit the spa room for a massage, visit one of the many vendor tables, sample the desserts and take a chance at winning one of several basket raffle prizes or a 50/50 prize.  Noel Jackson was our emcee for the night and did a fine job of entertaining the crowd.  Thanks to our committee members, Valerie Dzagulones, Ruth Sebaly, Julianna VanBuren, Paulette Dillingham, Rick Williams, Wes Mator and Anita Twardesky, for putting this fun evening together!  Thanks also to the many volunteers that helped out and those that made donations to help raise funds!

Ed Shenton and Val Dzagulones also gathered a group of volunteers to partner with the Trenton Civic Commission for Shred Day on Saturday.  Residents were able to bring documents to shred for a small donation back to the groups.  There were several volunteers there when I stopped by, such as Ed, Val, Tom Dickman, Ray Yee, Kim Mott, Stan Gruzdaitis, Dan Leiter, Ron Sheck, Mike McCullough, Alice Shenton and Bob Haveman.  Thank you to those volunteers and the others that helped out!

Have a good week!

***May is Youth Services Month***

As Rotarians, we channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.  The fifth Avenue of Service, Youth Service, recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as , ,  (RYLA), and .

Rotaract brings together young people ages 18-30 in universities and communities worldwide to organize service activities, develop their leadership and professional skills, and have fun. Rotary clubs sponsor them, but Rotaract club members manage and fund their clubs independently.

Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with other young people in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world. Interact clubs organize at least two service projects a year: one that benefits their community and one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.

RYLA is a leadership development program that is organized at the club, district, or multi-district level. The format of your event depends on what you hope to accomplish, your resources, and your audience – it could be a one-day seminar, a three-day retreat, or a weeklong camp.

Rotary Youth Exchange gives a young person the opportunity of a lifetime. Exposure to new cultures and customs is a powerful way to promote global understanding and peace. And it’s not just students who benefit – your Rotary club and host families will too.

Foundation Minute for the Week of May 11th

An invisible, growing monster roams the streets, preying on millions of innocent victims throughout the world.  This monster is Child Slavery, and it is woven into the very fabric of our daily lies. According to Kevin Bales, co-founder of Free the Slaves, there are 27 million slaves worldwide.  Aware of this horrific plight of victims and the necessity for rehabilitation after the rescue, The Rotary Club of West Chester Downtown, Pennsylvania with the help of The Rotary Foundation was able to provide funding for a tiny herd of cows, a sow shed and a bio-gas system for the rehabilitation center for girls who have been rescued from sex slavery in Punarnawa Ashram in India.

The cows feed 40 residents daily; the bio-gas system processes cow manure to cook meals and compost for their gardens.  They act as a resource to learn animal husbandry and cooking skills, and the extra milk generates income.

“Wiping out root causes of slavery helps prevent further victims.  Education and community vigilance are ways of prevention as are job training, feeding people who may be temporarily down and out on their luck, and helping victims of war-torn areas or natural disasters is like inoculating communities against slavery, “ according to Carol Metzger co-founder of the Rotary Action Group Against Child Slavery.

Your support of the Rotary Foundation helps this happen.  Thank you.  -- Zone 29 RRFC Neil McBeth
