Polio Presentation

Gretchen Bren is very involved in her Rotary District: she is club president of the Omaha Night Rotary Club, the spouse of a past District Governor, has been the District 5650 Polio Plus chair for the past several years, and is also a District Trainer and a facilitor at the Rotary Zone level for District trainers. She is also the immediate past chair of the Rotary Action Group for Polio Survivors. It was in November 2008 that Gretchen made her first polio immunization trip to Kaduna, Nigeria, and has since been there 6 more trips . Gretchen has also traveled to Chad twice, Mali, India, and Madagascar and Pakistan to participate in immunization projects in those countries. In 2012, Gretchen received the Citation for Meritorious Service from the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation and in 2014 she received the International Service Award for a Polio-Free World from the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation. Gretchen currently works for Turner Technology as the Director of Operations and is also a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Master Instructor (aka - a real computer nerd). She has been married to Gary for 32 years. Gary is a Past District Governor (2016-2017). Both are very active in Rotary Leadership Institute, RI Visioning, and are multiple Paul Harris Fellows and major donors to the Rotary Foundation. |

Bill Harvey is Rotary Foundation Committee Chair for Rotary District 5650 which includes clubs in Southwest Iowa and Eastern Nebraska. Bill has been a member of the Rotary Club of Omaha since 1997 where he has served on the Board, various committees, and as Club President (2017-18). Bill is an attorney and a partner of EHPV Management Group which operates a number businesses in Nebraska and elsewhere. Bill and his wife Gretchen Harvey (also an attorney and a Rotarian) are the parents of a daughter studying to be a clinical psychologist, a son who is deputy controller for a publicly traded investment fund, and a goldendoodle named Cooper. Bill is also the President of the Fellowship of Rotarian Genealogists, an international fellowship of Rotarians interested in genealogy and family history. |

Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA)

Michael Helgerson is Executive Director at the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA)—the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Omaha-Council Bluffs region. As Executive Director, Michael oversees agency operations and MAPA's roles as Council of Governments (COG), Economic Development District (EDD), and MPO. In his previous role as Transportation & Data Manager, Michael led the transportation planning process for the three-county MPO region that includes Douglas, Sarpy and the urbanized portion of Pottawattamie Counties. Michael recently led the development of MAPA’s 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan, a regional effort undertaken in partnership with the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s ConnectGO initiative. Early Learning Center

Club Members Dr. Murillo and Chris LaFerla are excited to present on the Early Learning Center. The School District is planning construction of an Early Learning Center, which will make universal preschool a reality, and enhance birth-to-3 childcare services for families in our district. Located at the former Tinley site at North 8th Street and Avenue G, the new facility will add twelve additional 3 and 4 year old preschool classrooms, small and large motor skill rooms, and sensory and outdoor play areas. Wrap around supports and family programming will also be provided, including health, safety, medical, dental, and nutrition services. In a unique partnership with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and the Department of Education, the district will operate two birth-to-3 childcare rooms with the help of a consultant provided by the state. The Early Learning Center will make access to high quality preschool and childcare services available to nearly 200 additional children in Council Bluffs. |

Debi Durham is a longtime economic and community development professional who serves as Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA). Durham was named to the positions by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in January 2019. Durham was first appointed to lead IEDA in 2011, and during her eight-year tenure, has turned the agency into a successful public-private partnership, landed billion-dollar economic development projects for Iowa and worked tirelessly on expanding trade and investment opportunities for the state. She prides herself on building coalitions, supporting new ventures and strengthening the state’s industries and communities. Prior to joining IEDA, Durham served as president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. Her several accolades include being recognized as one of the “Most Influential Business Leaders” in the 2019 Des Moines Business Record Book of Lists and receiving the Technology Association of Iowa’s “Legislative Advocacy Leader” award in 2017. Durham also was recognized by the Business Record as a “Woman of Influence” in 2016. Durham holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Marketing and Management from Missouri Southern State University |

Andrea Edwards, graduated from Bellevue University in 2016 with her MPA, she is currently a Program Director with Heartland Family Service, Heartland Housing Sanctuary and has 11 years of experience in human service programs, primarily focusing on housing and behavioral health services. Mrs. Edwards has assisted with starting and developing 3 different housing projects, including a 16-unit transitional housing program for low-income families with a member having a disability, a 160-unit scattered-site rapid-rehousing program that serves youth, families, and chronically homeless, and currently the Sanctuary program that includes a 12-bed shelter, advocacy, and housing program for adult survivors of human trafficking. |

“FIRST AVE: It’s More than a Trail”

Brandon Garrett is the new Chief of Staff for the City of Council Bluffs and has been the Community Development Director for the City since 2017. He will be presenting on “FIRST AVE: It’s More than a Trail”. The organization's Mission is to continuously improve the quality of life and attractiveness of the City of Council Bluffs. "FIRST AVE" is an acronym for "Furthering Interconnections, Revitalization, Streetscapes, Transportation, and Aesthetics for a Vibrant Economy". The 1st Avenue multi-use trail project is a major component of that "FIRST AVE" vision. The trail was first adopted as a component of the 2015 West Broadway Corridor Plan and we are now implementing that piece. The multi-use trail connects existing trails from 16th Street to 35th Street utilizing the former railroad corridor one block south of West Broadway known as 1st Avenue. |

DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Antonia Krupicka-Smith is the Library Director at the Council Bluffs Public Library. In December The Library launched the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for zip codes 51501 and 51503. This book gifting program is funded through the Council Bluffs Public Library Foundation and additional support from the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club of Council Bluffs Noon. Antonia will be giving us an update on this program and how it is helping our community. |

Jan Schnack is the Family Caregiver Community Engagement Specialist at Connections Area Agency on Aging. She enjoys working with the aging population and assists with enhancing the quality of life for elders in our service area through education, planning and coordination of services. She graduated from Creighton University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Health Administration and Policy ; and two Master’s degrees, one in health care ethics and the other one in Theology. She also earned one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education through Alegent Creighton Health. Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the Dementia Friends initiative is underway in Iowa and across the United States. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects families, each of us can make a difference for people touched by dementia. |

For nearly three decades, Matt has worked diligently to make Council Bluffs a destination for new companies, new residents, and frequent visitors while meeting the needs of our existing businesses and current residents. The mayor has been involved with a variety of organizations in leadership roles: Our membership committee is promoting Bring A Friend this week. We encourage members to bring a friend. Crisis Response Service

Jenny Stewart serves as the Director for Crisis Response Services for Heartland Family Service in both Southwest Iowa, as well as a portion of the Omaha Metro Area. The Crisis Response Teams are responsible for determining client’s immediate needs and makes recommendations and referrals to appropriate level of care. Jenny serves as a liaison and maintains relationships with law enforcement agencies, judges, hospital personnel, and other key community resources and provides mental health training to law enforcement and key stakeholders. |

Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy

We will be hearing from Justin Schultz with Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy(SIRE). SIRE is a state of the art dry-mill grain processing facility that produces over 130 million gallons of fuel grade ethanol, over 365,000 tons of Dried Distillers' Grain (DDGs) per year and has the ability to produce Wet Distiller Grains (WDGs). It also produces approximately 90,000 lbs per day of corn oil. |
