Carol Keller is asking each member to send a card to a shut in for Thanksgiving for a November service project.  This time of year can be difficult and is more difficult this year due to COVID-19 and we thought this would be a good way to provide a little cheer.

Duck Sales

We are selling ducks for the 23rd Annual United Way Duck Run.  Each members is to sell 12 ducks.  On Friday, December 11, 2020 the winning ducks will be "Plucked from the YMCA pool".  Please pick up your ducks from Gail Wurdeman or Richard Snyder.

Cattlemen's Ball

Brenda Blatchford spoke to us about the upcoming Nebraska Cattlemen's Ball that will be held in Columbus in June 2020. Richard Snyder has made arrangements with Kim and Marv Konz to take each members photograph at the Tuesday, January 7, 2020 noon meeting.  This photo will be included in our upcoming edition of Rotary Who's Who in Columbus Noon Rotary.  This Konz's have agreed to to this service for our club at no cost.  If possible, please come a little early, so this process goes a smoothly as possible.  Please mark January 7, 2020 on your calendar and let's try to have 100% attendance.

100th Anniversary

The invitations to the 100th Anniversary of Columbus Noon Rotary on March 26th have been sent.  Club members can sign up for the celebration at our Tuesday meetings and choose either beef or chicken for their meals.  Checks for $35 each can be made out to Columbus Noon Rotary and given to Anne Kinnison.

Open Sky Program

On October 2nd Noon Rotary and the Chamber Legislative Committee is co-hosting a presentation from Renee Fry, executive director of OpenSky Policy Institute.  She will provide an update on the state's tax, budget and school finance debate. Her discussion will touch on some of the conversations being held around the state regarding ways to provide property tax relief. OpenSky is a non-partisan think tank that examines Nebraska state tax, budget and school finance policy. Renee is OpenSky's founding executive director. Before founding OpenSky, Renee was the founding director of government relations for the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), and subsequently the director of public relations for UNMC. Renee also spent several years working for the Nebraska Legislature in a variety of roles, including Legal Counsel to Speaker and Legal Counsel to the Judiciary Committee.

District Grant Opportunity

We have scheduled Sherri Prim on October 23rd from Norfolk to explain the Rotary District Grant program on Human Trafficking.  Their will be several opportunities to attend a 4 hour training session about the grant, but most of them occur before October 23rd.  As I understand it the District program to combat human trafficking will be to help train hotel/motel employees in the area.  For more information about the training opportunities please see the Rotary District 5650 website.

Loup d' Loup

Our major Community Service Project in cooperation with Morning Rotary has been Loup d' Loup.  There is serious discussion about changing the time of this event in the future.  Jill Ramaekers has been our representative, but the Club needs an alternate who could attend meetings and report back to Noon Rotary.  President Neal Valorz has asked members to please give this some thought and consider helping with this project.

On Sunday, September 9th, Marv and Kim Konz from Morning Rotary are having a Social at their home near Monroe. Comfort Closet Project, Formerly Project Pencils

As a service project we are going to gather items to help Columbus Area grade schools fill their "Comfort Closets".  
Please Donate:
Granola bars or healthly snack foods,  pencils, pens, notebooks, markers, crayons, other school supplies.
Toiletries to help with personal hygiene-toothbrushes, toothpaste, wet wipes, deodorant, hair brushes, combs, detanglers, dry shampoo, etc.
Clothing, such as child size socks, underwear, hats, gloves, tennis shoes, sweatpants. 
If you would rather make a cash donation, please make checks out to Columbus Public School Foundation and put "Comfort Closets" in the memo.  
Please bring your items to a Rotary meeting. Items will be accepted through Tuesday, July 31st.
Items will be donated to the Comfort Closet for distribution to needy students in Columbus.

Governor Pete Ricketts

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts will be our program on March 13th.  This would be a nice meeting to invite other guests.  We are going to meet in the Ramada ballroom. Cost for the meal will be $15 and paid at the door.  The Chamber of Commerce will be taking reservations for the meal, so please call them at 402-564-2769 to make a reservation.

Donations for Hurricane 

 We will be passing the hat for donations at the meetings on September 5 and September 12.  We will send the donations on to the the Salvation Army in Houston to help with the tremendous needs from Hurricane Harvey.  If a member would prefer, you can make a check out to the Salvation Army.

Christmas For Our Troops

We are gathering items to send in care packages for Christmas for our troops who are deployed for our November Service project.  Please bring items on either Tuesday, November 1st or Tuesday, November 8th that can be included in the care packages.  If you would rather donate cash, it will be used to ship the packages and to purchase overseas phone cards.  To donate cash a check can be made out to Pinnacle Bank.  Thanks to Chelsea Geu who is chairing this service project for Rotary.

Backpack Program

On Tuesday, October 4th at 5:30 we will be packing backpacks for about 300 students and celebrating the Rotary grant for this important community service.  Please stop out at 3602 16th Street and help load the weekend backpacks with food.  The Food For Thought Weekend Backpack Program is sponsored by the Columbus United Methodist Church.

Ducks

Please bring money for the ducks and any unsold ducks to Rotary on August 6th.  This is the 22nd year for the Duck Races during Columbus Days.  Service clubs sales are an important part of raising funds for Columbus United Way. Loup d' Loup

Loup d' Loup is Saturday, June 16th, 2018.  For more information, please see www.loupdloup.com.  Please promote this bike ride to end polio now.  This is our major fund raiser for the year and we need as many members as possible to make this successful.  Half of the funds raised with be for Polio Plus and half will be go to the Royal Family KIDS Camp.
