COVID-19 pandemic global disaster response US$4.7 million+ to date from Rotary

Resolving conflict, achieving peace in our world another major Rotary undertaking

Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. 90 percent of those killed in conflicts are civilians and half of those are children. Often conflict starts and continues over long periods in competition for dwindling resources and as environmental changes force people to migrate.

Fergal McCarthy, the Peace Programs Manager at Rotary International in Chicago, spoke to Ladner Rotary members and District 5040 Peace leaders on May 5, 2020. Prior to his role at Rotary, Fergal worked at the Rand Corporation in California, the Irish Prime Minister’s Office in Dublin Ireland as well as the Irish Foreign Ministry.  He holds a BA in World Religions & Theology and an MPhil in International Peace Studies both from Trinity College Dublin, an MA in Comparative Ethnic Conflict Studies from Queens University Belfast, and an MSt in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.

Reducing male violence
One in three women in our world suffer from gender-based violence. During this COVID-19 pandemic there is estimated to be a 20 percent increase in reports of this form of violence. For every month our self isolation continues gender-based violence is expected to increase even more, by an estimated 15 million more cases. Rotary sponsored high school Interact club finishes one year and readies for next
Young leaders at Delta Secondary School, who make up the Ladner Rotary sponsored Interact Club, complete a productive year, despite the COVID-19 shut down, and look to a more productive one in the coming year. Interact Club President 2019-20 Nathan Senyard, and 2020-21 President Aish Wariya, spoke to Ladner Rotary members at a club meeting on May 12.

From marketing printing to wine, new member welcome
A Rotary member for almost 45 years, Tsawwassen resident Bob Silvester recently joined Ladner Rotary from Rotary Club of Burnaby. In his "classification speech" to club members, so we could get to know him, Bob outlined a career in marketing for the printing business and then in the wine business.

Rotary District recognizes two Ladner Rotarians
Two Ladner Rotarians received District Governor Awards on May 24th at the Rotary District 5040 2020 Vision Roskars Awards, a virtual ceremony of awards presentations which normally would have been held at the District Conference in late April, but cancelled earlier in the year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ladner Rotary President Bridget Jacob, right, presents to Past District Governor Penny Offer a member of the month gift in recognition and thanks for her contributions to the club in leading a review of the bylaws, her district and international work and faithful attendance to support all of our club events, such as pumpkins for polio, summer barbecue and Christmas dinner event, among others.
District 5040 2020 Vision Speakers Series and Roskars Awards
All members in our District now have the opportunity, through Zoom, to experience the inspiration and learn from the shared knowledge and wisdom of some of the leading speakers who were scheduled to speak at the cancelled 2020 Vision Conference in Vancouver in April.
 
The 2020 Vision Speakers Series will include five speakers, as scheduled below, including District Governor Bala Naidoo.

Clean up readies Arthur Drive for Spring
A team of 15 Ladner Rotarians gathered on May 9 to clean a section of Arthur Drive, taking away large bags of rubbish for the city dump.
