Joshua Wollny, from Germany, is one of 13 high school students who have come from nations on four continents to spend a year in the western BC clubs of Rotary District 5040. The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen sponsored Josh to spend the school year in the Delta area and was accommodated part of the time by Rotary Ladner President Elect Ulf Ottho.

Josh reported on his wide range of experiences with Rotarians and excursions with other exchange students including: landing a large salmon; first time water skiing, football and rugby; travels about BC.

Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year all over the world. A high school student from a local sponsoring Rotary club will spend the school year under the care of a sponsoring club of another country in each case. The aim is for each student on exchange to share her or his own culture while embracing a new one, help foster global understanding and, in the process, learn a great deal about them self and their country in the process.

Based on a small-scale European program started in 1929 by the Rotary Club of Copenhagen, Rotary International (RI) endorsed the Youth Exchange program in 1972 to clubs world wide as a “worthwhile international activity”. Now more than 80 countries and 8,000 students participate in the program every year.
