While the new Ladner Rotary Splash Park attracted thousands of visitors during the summer, the play area in Memorial Park is attracting many more for the festive season with the first annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 7th from 4pm to 7pm. The Rotary Club of Ladner, which is hosting this 1st Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, invites the entire community to this year’s event to help celebrate and help create the magic of the Christmas season.

After co-sponsoring the Ladner Rotary Splash Park with the City of Delta and with the support of generous sponsors, Ladner Rotary has taken this step to light up the play area with two 65 foot trees plus the Gazebo area. To help with the big job of suspending all the lights, Bob Mazdine helped with use of their  60 foot lift.

The actual lighting of the 65-foot Christmas trees will be at 5:15 pm by Rotary Club of Ladner President, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, and Delta Mayor George Harvie.

“Santa will be out and about spreading good cheer and the spirit of Christmas throughout the 3-hour tree lighting event on December 7th,” says Ladner Rotary project leader Walt Hayward. “There will be live music provided by community singers known as ‘The Happy Wanderers’ plus hot chocolate, cookies and candy canes.”

McDonalds Restaurant in Ladner will donate the freshly baked cookies and Save-On Foods in Ladner, the candy canes.

For an excellent photo opportunity, Hayward says: “Inside the Reach building next to the splash park venue, Santa will be sitting on his large red Christmas chair to welcome the children along with two helpers. Also on hand will be a Santa mailbox with letters going direct to the North Pole. Children can bring a letter from home or create one at one of the craft tables.”

The children’s craft tables will be operated by the local Rotary Interactors club (high school age Rotary members) also inside the Reach Child and Youth Development Society building.
