News/Updates
Student of the Month is a "Renaissance Man"
During this week's meeting, Luke Templin was announced as Student of the Month for October. From all indications, Luke is a renaissance man (a person with many talents or areas of knowledge).

Before Luke spoke, he was introduced by Steve Balster, Assistant Principal from Sycamore High School. Steve shared that Luke attended South Prairie Elementary, his current GPA is 4.463, and he is ranked seventh in his class. Steve also shared that Luke is involved with the Engineering Math and Science Academy, attends Aviation Flight School, participates in Student Council, History Club, and Art Club, the SHS Quartet, National Honor Society, Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, serves as grant leader for Youth Engaged in Philanthropy, plays in Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, and Sycamore Jazz Strings, Pit Orchestra, and Madrigals.

To top it all off, Luke brought his cello to the club meeting and played Song of the Birds, a brief Spanish folk song which was performed by a famous cellist named Pablo Pasals at a United Nations Assembly in 1971.

As for the $100 he received from the Rotary Club of Sycamore as Student of the Month, Luke will be donating it to the Sycamore Music Boosters.

We were pleased to have Luke's parents, Dan and Kristal, with us as well as we celebrated Luke's honor.
Clean Water Challenges in Ecuador
Julie Allen, Executive Director of Engineers in Action, and her colleague, Carlos Aguilera, Director of Operations for FIEA-Ecuador, presented at this week's meeting about Ecuador and its clean water challenges. EIA collaborated with the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club (represented by AJ Roth, who also attended our meeting) recently collaborated on a Rotary International Global Grant in an effort to address the issues.

After some words by AJ and Julie, Carlos shared details about Ecuador and the unique characteristics of its geography and its people. Unfortunately, the 1:00 PM conclusion of the meeting came before he had a chance to share details about the Rotary International Global Grant project. I am sharing some of the information here from the second slide presentation deck that was to be shared during the meeting:

Project Name: WASH In Schools, Guangaje, Cotopaxi, Ecuador

The educational centers of the Guangaje community face several problems, due to the lack of knowledge of basic hygiene standards, little access to preventive health information, and the lack of adequate hygiene facilities. In this way, most of the families have presented complications in their health.

According to data from the "Rafael Ruiz Arroyo" Hospital in Pujilí, the main causes of medical attention are due to Acute Respiratory Infections (acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, and Rhinopharyngitis), diseases transmitted by the consumption and use of unsafe water (Parasitosis; Gastroenteritis acute, Amebiasis, acute diarrheal diseases, and dermatitis). Despite the fact that these diseases affect a large part of the population, it is necessary to emphasize that both children and adolescents are the most affected. This directly influences the rates of both scholar absence and dropout. Another reason why adolescents leave early their studies is pregnancy. According to INEC, the province of Cotopaxi occupies the sixth place nationwide in adolescent pregnancies and is increasing in rural areas, due to the lack of campaigns for sexual education and ignorance linked to taboo subjects within the home and the idiosyncrasy of the community. The current facilities were built 18 years ago, the oldest ones, and 12 years ago, the most recent ones. The deterioration is mainly due to the excessive use generated by the number of current students and the lack of maintenance. For this reason, the problem will also be addressed from a health component with WASH workshops.

Using the WASH tool, an evaluation determined that:
  • At least half of the sanitary parts (toilets, sinks and faucets) must be repaired or replaced.
  • The external water network has sufficient pressure and flow for the school, but the internal distribution system is damaged.
  • There are leaky connections and doors whose handles security standards.
  • There is a lack of garbage cans, cleaning supplies, soap and toilet paper dispensers.
  • There is differentiation of areas for women and men, but there is no distinction of space for children, adolescents and adults.
  • There is not enough infographics or signage on hand washing, good use of facilities, nor cleaning/maintenance records.
  • The paint and part of the plastering must be replaced.
  • According to the number of students there is a deficit of 10 toilets, 10 sinks, 3 urinals.
  • The intervention includes 11 toilets, 11 sinks, 4 urinals and also 1 toilet plus 1 sink for people with disabilities.

In order to address the clean water challenges found, the groups hope to train local residents on the following concepts:
  • Hand hygiene
  • Personal Hygiene and Household food, Proper Management of sanitary units
  • Water Care and Water Treatment at the Home Level and its safe storage.
  • Menstrual Health and Hygiene
Rotary to Host Chicken Salad Taste Test with Suter Company at October 26th Club Meeting

50/50 Raffle Proceeds to Support New Cause Each Month
As with Happy Dollars and fines, 50/50 raffle proceeds have long been earmarked for the scholarship fund for Sycamore High School seniors. In an effort to "spread the wealth" and support more causes, the members of your Rotary Board have determined that 50/50 raffle proceeds collected each month will benefit a different cause.

For the month of April, 50/50 raffle proceeds will help support Tails Humane Society to build a compassionate community through the care of companion animals. The Board has committed that the total amount given to this cause will be no less than $250.

Thank you for your support of this important cause...and best of luck with the raffle!

Volunteers Needed For Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County's Home Build in Malta
My name is Kim McIver, and I am the new Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County. With this being the 2nd week on the job, I am humbled to be joining such an incredible affiliate!

Since 1998, this affiliate has built 15 homes and we are going strong on our 16th build in Malta. Having come from a different Habitat for Humanity affiliate, I know just how critical our volunteer base is. I know that every single Habitat home is built with love, and that love is what gives our Partner Families the Foundation to start their future. That every volunteer hour that is spent building a home is a memory that a partner family treasures as they start a new phase in their lives.

You are all a part of that, and with that feeling of building memories for our families, I would like to invite you to join us on Saturdays in Malta at 8am.

Please RSVP to me at kmciver.hfhdc@gmail.com, so we can plan accordingly. And I look forward to meeting you in person on our build site soon. I truly don’t think there are enough words to express our thanks for all that you do.
