Club members gathered at the Sycamore Park District Community Center this week for a special "off-site" to learn about the new-for-some-but-not-for-others game of pickleball.
Experienced pickleball player Dr. Paul Stromborg and Park District Executive Director Jonelle Bailey display and discuss pickleball equipment, including paddles that range in price from about $30 to over $500 each!
Standing courtside, Paul provided instruction to fellow club members regarding the fundamentals of pickleball, including the all important rule to "stay out of the kitchen!" Who are we to argue?
Paul showed off one of his favorite pickleball shirts...and his favorite hat twist! This shirt shows how a pickleball court is divided and sectioned. Remember: Stay out of the kitchen!
Lines, lines, everywhere there are lines! The blue tape lines on this Park District court show the pickleball playing area. There was no discussion about the other tape lines present, but feel free to speculate wildly.
As with Happy Dollars and fines, 50/50 raffle proceeds have long been earmarked for the scholarship fund for Sycamore High School seniors. In an effort to "spread the wealth" and support more causes, the members of your Rotary Board have determined that 50/50 raffle proceeds collected each month will benefit a different cause.
For the month of June, 50/50 raffle proceeds will help support CASA DeKalb County, Inc. to advocate for and serve as the voice for children who have experienced abuse or neglect in DeKalb County. The Board has committed that the total amount given to this cause will be no less than $250.

May 17, 1875 – The first Kentucky Derby horse race is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville. It is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the U.S.
May 17, 1954 – In Brown v. Board of Education, the U. S. Supreme Court unanimously rules the segregation of public schools “solely on the basis of race” denies Black children equal education opportunity. The case against segregation was argued by future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
May 19, 1980 – The Mt. St. Helens volcano erupts in Washington State, its first major eruption since 1857, sending steam and ash eleven miles into the sky. It is the deadliest and most economic destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. A total of 57 people are killed and 200 homes,47 bridges, 15 miles of railway, and 185 miles of highway are destroyed.
May 20, 1927 – 25-year-old Charles Lindberg takes off in the “Spirit of Saint Louis” and becomes the first person to complete a solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. On this same date in 1932 Amelia Earhart would become the first woman to complete a solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic.
