Rotary Student of the Month, Jordyn Tistra, talks about her passion for winning and her pursuit of certainty during this week’s meeting. Tistra said her tennis coach inspired her to deliver her very best in preparing for upcoming matches. She said this positive approach to preparation has helped her approach life challenges with a winning spirit as well. Tistra also said she likes certainty in what she faces, such as knowing one-and-one equals two. She says this has led to her interest in a college pursuit of aerospace engineering after graduation. She is considering the University of Kentucky or University of Missouri, but candidly admitted dorm room amenities may sway her final decision. Tistra has a head-start on college because she is already taking college classes at Kishwaukee College. Besides tennis, Tistra is a member of the school math team, student council, and a community volunteer with her church and the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) non-profit. She was introduced to CASA by her mother who volunteered with them. Tistra will donate her $100 Rotary check to the CASA organization.
In lieu of a speaker, this week's meeting featured club members making Valentine's Day cards for residents of the Oak Crest Retirement Community...and the creative juices were flowing!
February 4, 1902 – American aviator Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, is born in Detroit, Michigan. His 1927 flight in “The Spirit of Saint Louis” is credited with ushering in a new era of global transportation. Later, the 1932 kidnapping and death of the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh created a media frenzy. It spurred Congress to pass the so-called “Lindbergh” law making it a federal crime to transport a kidnap victim across state lines.
