Christi Coulter, MSW, CC, CRS A/D, Information and Assistance Supervisor and SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) Coordinator for Elder Care Services, shared an overview of the nonprofit's resources with club members during Wednesday's meeting.
Elder Care Services representative Christi Coulter gave an overview of the multitude of free services available to the elderly of DeKalb County during this week’s Rotary meeting. All of the services are available to those age 60 and over with certain services available for those 18 to 59 with a disability. Coulter was introduced to Elder Care Services as a graduate studies intern and got invited to join the organization full-time after graduating with a Master’s degree in social work.
Services to Elder Care clients are funded through government and local grants and donations with a goal of helping seniors live independently as long as possible. Key services offered are:
Care Coordination – includes case management, Community Care Program, and understanding choices for care.
Adult Protective Services – intervention for those faced with abuse or self-neglect.
Money Management – budgeting guidance, credit counseling, bill payment and payee representative services (including notary service).
Information and Assistance – benefits counseling for clients.
Senior Health Insurance Program – insurance education, guidance, and assistance for Medicare and Medicaid.
Cognitive Support Program – a comprehensive program for those experiencing cognitive difficulties.
Caregiver Services and Supports – groups, supports, and services for caregivers and families.
Get Me to Monday Pantry – an emergency food pantry providing 2-4 days of shelf-stable food plus a list of all regularly scheduled food pantries in the county.
Coulter said other services include “Medicare Mondays” providing 15-minute professional insurance assistance and “Walk-in Wednesday” for 15-minute walk-in appointments with Information and Assistance professionals to address benefits and get answers to questions. Most frequently requested services involve in-home assistance and help with technology (computers and cell phones) according to Coulter. She also promoted a movie fundraiser on October 6 at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb with the film “Willy Wonka.” Full information about Elder Care Services of DeKalb County is available on their website at www.ecsdekalb.org.
Donations are currently being requested for the Sycamore Food Pantry. Bring a bottle of laundry detergent...or $10 for Julie Sgarlata to purchase one. Money is easier to handle.
Personal hygiene items (bar soap, shampoo, etc.) are also being sought.

Dear Rotary Club Presidents, Club Secretaries, and All District 6420 Rotarians,
It is time for our clubs to consider nominating a Rotarian to serve as Governor for Rotary District 6420 for the 2024-25 Rotary year.
The qualifications to become Governor include being a member in good standing of a club in good standing, serving at least one full term as a club president, and being available in person to meet with the Nominating Committee on the date set by that committee. That interview date is tentatively set for Saturday, December 4, 2021.
The successful candidate will join the Governor Line, serving as the District Governor Nominee Designate in the second half of the 2021-22 Rotary year, District Governor Nominee in 2022-23, District Governor Elect in 2023-24, and District Governor in 2024-25.
There is an expectation that a Past District Governor will continue to serve the District in some leadership position for at least two years following the Governor year. A high-quality Governor training program is provided by Zone, Region, and Rotary International personnel.
A prospective candidate should contact me or any past Governor with any questions.
Each club is eligible to nominate one candidate, and the club must sign off on their full support for their candidate. Official nomination forms are available by contacting me. Also, the nomination forms need to be returned to me by the deadline for nominations which is Monday, November 15, 2021. Candidates will be contacted to set up interviews following the deadline.
