A surprised Father William Etheredge of Saint Mary’s receives an unlimited season pass to the Sycamore Golf Course from Rotarian Julie Sgarlata to honor his donation of a kidney to aid his sister. Father Etheredge is having a smooth recovery but Rotarians felt it might enhance the process if he could incorporate his enjoyment of golfing into his exercise routine and took up a collection to make that happen. Sgarlata said there were a few extra dollars left over after the golf pass purchase which were added to the “Happy Dollars” fine pool to pay it forward for additional club scholarship money.
Northern Illinois University (NIU) head golf coach John Carlson updates the outlook for the Huskies’ season at this week’s Sycamore Rotary meeting. Carlson is starting his sixth season as head coach and has taken the golf program to powerhouse status in the MAC Conference.
NIU head golf coach John Carlson has guided the program to four straight top three finishes in Mid-American Conference play, including a number one finish in 2023. He told members of Sycamore Rotary this week he hopes to continue that trend in the Huskies final year of MAC competition before joining the Horizon League. Carlson came to NIU in 2019 from the University of Minnesota where he spent ten years. He has prior experience as a golf club pro and has toured nationally as a professional golfer. He is a 2001 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Coach Carlson said it is a “true joy” to be part of the DeKalb-Sycamore community and NIU. He likened the athletic program at NIU to “a family” with students playing sports for the love of the game and coaches from all sports supporting each other. Carlson said the golf program at NIU recruits mainly Midwest students, although they have had southeast and southwest areas of the country represented as well as golfers from foreign countries. Carlson himself remains an avid golfer, playing about 30 rounds a year.

April 8, 1913 – The 17th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution was ratified requiring direct popular election of U.S. Senators instead of being chosen by state legislators.
April 9, 1865 – General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, effectively ending the Civil War.
April 11, 1968 – President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Generally called the Fair Housing Act, it expands on previous acts by adding federal enforcement provisions to prohibit discrimination in housing based on race, religion, and national origin. It was passed following the April 4th assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and subsequent civil unrest.
