In lieu of our regular noon meeting, club members were invited to gather at Northern Illinois University's Convocation Center this week.
“Swish” and a score by Northern Illinois University (NIU) during their Women’s Basketball game against Western Michigan University at the Convocation Center in DeKalb on February 14. It was a close first half with the Huskies down by only 2 points, 25 to 23. Unfortunately, not enough NIU shots went through the hoop in the second half and they lost 65 to 47.
The Huskie Women’s Basketball Cheer Squad urges fans to show their spirit during a Valentine’s Day game. The cheer squad was joined by mascot “Victor E. Huskie” and several assistants who invited members of the audience to be part of some special contests during breaks in the game and the chance to win various prizes such as upgraded seats or concession treats.
A boisterous crowd cheers on the Huskie’s Women’s Basketball team on Valentine’s Day. There were 14 bus loads of youngsters from area schools in attendance for “Education Day” leading to a special youthful enthusiasm on the part of the crowd.
Deluxe suite accommodations awaited Rotarians attending the NIU Women’s Basketball game. The accommodations included cushioned seats for balcony viewing, spacious table arrays for eating and conversation, and a buffet lunch for the game that had an 11 AM tipoff.

February 11, 1847 – Prolific inventor Thomas Edison is born in Milan, Ohio. Throughout his lifetime he acquires over 1,200 patents. Among his achievements, Edison perfects common usage of the light bulb, motion pictures, the phonograph, and the stock ticker.
February 12, 1809 – The 16th President of the U. S., Abraham Lincoln, is born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. By the time he was a young man his family had relocated to Illinois where he became a self-taught lawyer, then served in both the state General Assembly and U. S. Congress. He became President in 1861, guided the Union through the Civil War, and abolished slavery. He was assassinated just a few days after Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox.
February 14, 1818 – African-American abolitionist, lecturer, and editor, Frederick Douglass, who was also an escaped slave, is born in Talbot County, Maryland.
February 15, 1809 - Inventor and industrialist Cyrus McCormick is born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He invents a horse-drawn mechanical reaper contributing to development and cultivation of vast areas of the American Great Plains. His reaper forms the basis of International Harvester Corporation.
February 14, 1929 – The infamous St. Valentine’s Day massacre occurred in Chicago when seven members of the Bugs Moran gang were gunned down by five of Al Capone’s mobsters posing as police.
February 15, 1898 – The U. S. Battleship Maine was blown up while in Havana harbor with 260 crew members lost. Inflamed public opinion (“Remember the Maine”) led to a declaration of war against Spain.
February 15, 1933 – An assassination attempt on newly-elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt occurred in Miami, Florida. A spectator deflected the gunman’s aim, but Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was shot and killed instead.
February 16, 1923 – English archaeologist Howard Carter enters the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen culminating a five-year search for the boy-king’s tomb. The tomb’s interior treasures were untouched after more than 3,000 years with King Tut’s mummy the most perfectly preserved ever discovered.
