We learned a lot of great new information about Joyce Klein, Chief of Corrections for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, when she delivered her classification speech this week.
Joyce grew up on Chicago’s south side, attending Catholic school and cheering on the Bears and the White Sox (just as her father intended). When she was a teenager, her family moved to the suburbs and she moved to a much larger high school (Bloom High School in Palos Heights) from her Catholic school in the city.
After graduating (early), attended Northern Illinois University and earned a degree in Journalism. There she fell in love with the university…and with Dave Munch, who was also attending NIU. Dave and Joyce have been happily married for 38 years and counting!
Unsure of her career path, Joyce accepted Dave’s suggestion to pursue a position at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked. Joyce did, and she never left.
Joyce has served the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for 40 years. Over the years she’s had the opportunity to negotiate multiple bargaining agreements (several from both the union side and the employer side). She also had the opportunity to plan the $34 million 80,000 square foot DeKalb County Jail which opened in 2018. Joyce’s expertise in facility planning has also been shared with her church community, St. Mary's Parish Council.
Joyce is extremely thankful for the 2018 expansion, given its separate booking area and the need for social distancing during the pandemic. The building’s size and layout, combined with the fantastic management provided by Joyce and her employees, has allowed the jail to avoid any COVID-19 cases to date!
When she’s not doing her good work at the DeKalb County Jail, Joyce enjoys to downhill skiing, golf (preferably without counting strokes), and photography. Heidi Wright tells us Zeke is the most well-behaved dog, but Joyce isn’t sure she’d agree!
