Sycamore Rotarians achieving perfect attendance during the Rotary year will become “Bob Wildenradt Fellows” and receive a certificate noting their accomplishment. Family Service Agency Executive Director Tynisha Clegg updates Sycamore Rotarians on their expansion of services during this week’s meeting. Family Service Agency provides services for children’s advocacy, youth mentoring, family counseling, senior needs, and the local Community Action program.
Family Service Agency of DeKalb County (FSA) served 2,700 individual clients during their past fiscal year as they work to add services and resume more normal operations after the Covid-19 pandemic according to Executive Director Tynisha Clegg. Clegg updated Rotarians on FSA’s progress at this week’s meeting. Clegg was named Executive Director four years ago and has worked for FSA for 15 years. During her tenure, FSA undertook a large capital renovation project, assumed responsibility for the county Community Action Program, and more recently added services provided by Youth Service Bureau of DeKalb County through a merger.
FSA provides services in five main areas. Their Children’s Advocacy Center addresses issues of suspected child abuse or neglect. It helps coordinate services for individual cases and provides educational information to the entire community. The Youth Mentoring program includes child-adult mentors who meet throughout the month and “lunch buddies” where mentors are matched with a child during a school lunch period. Their Center for Counseling is staffed by licensed clinicians who can provide individual sessions and also support-groups for all ages. Services for Seniors include physical and social wellness programs to help maintain one’s independence. Their Community Action program is a conduit for government funded anti-poverty resources and emergency response assistance.
Clegg explained results of the impact of FSA in the community. She said about 180 children have been served through their child intervention efforts. Heightened awareness of abuse through “strangulation” and human trafficking are receiving increased attention. Clegg was excited to report the agency received a therapy dog to assist with child comfort during stressful situations. “Laddy” is a Labrador retriever that went through extensive special training. Clegg reported that their merger with Youth Service Bureau (YSB) is going well. Part of this is because almost all YSB staff were hired on to FSA. She did note a slight hiccup with the former YSB school lockout program (the alternative attendance option for students suspended from school). Two youth in the same room began a disturbance and it was only later staff learned their fighting is what got them expelled in the first place. Staff deescalated the situation and helped the two resolve their differences, but Clegg says improved communication on reasons for suspensions is now in place. The Board of Directors has decided in sincere appreciation and recognition of distinguished service, loyalty, and devotion with outstanding attendance in support of the ideals of Rotary, from here forward those of the Rotary Club of Sycamore who have achieved perfect attendance yearly will be bestowed upon and known in the future as members of the Robert Wildrenradt Fellows Society, each receiving a personalized certificate presented to them from our very own Most Senior Perfect Attendance Rotarian, detailing the rights and privileges of the RWF Society.
Congrats to the first incoming class of Perfect Attendance Rotarians who are becoming RW Fellows. For the rest of you, get off your butts...still time for makeups to get your Perfect Attendance to be inducted into the next RWF Society.

The Rotary Club of Sycamore will host a Chicken Salad Taste Test Event during our regular meeting on Wednesday, October 26 at 12:00 Noon. The Suter Company will give the club $10 for each tasting form that is collected, and 4 tubs of chicken salad will be to be auctioned off. All proceeds will benefit Polio Plus (Rotary's effort to end polio)!
This event checks all the boxes for Rotary: no cost to Rotarians, no tickets to sell, no volunteer time outside the meeting, and you get to taste chicken salad! Doesn’t get much better than that!

As with Happy Dollars and fines, 50/50 raffle proceeds have long been earmarked for the scholarship fund for Sycamore High School seniors. In an effort to "spread the wealth" and support more causes, the members of your Rotary Board have determined that 50/50 raffle proceeds collected each month will benefit a different cause.
For the month of May, 50/50 raffle proceeds will help support The Barn on Baseline to rescue and adopt out dogs and cats. The Board has committed that the total amount given to this cause will be no less than $250.

My name is Kim McIver, and I am the new Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County. With this being the 2nd week on the job, I am humbled to be joining such an incredible affiliate!
Since 1998, this affiliate has built 15 homes and we are going strong on our 16th build in Malta. Having come from a different Habitat for Humanity affiliate, I know just how critical our volunteer base is. I know that every single Habitat home is built with love, and that love is what gives our Partner Families the Foundation to start their future. That every volunteer hour that is spent building a home is a memory that a partner family treasures as they start a new phase in their lives.
You are all a part of that, and with that feeling of building memories for our families, I would like to invite you to join us on Saturdays in Malta at 8am.
