September 26, 1960 – For the first time in U.S. history, a debate between major party presidential candidates is shown on television. Democrat John F. Kennedy and Republican Richard M. Nixon square off at the studios of WBBM-TV in Chicago. Kennedy’s favorable appearance and demeanor on camera are credited with helping boost his campaign and ultimate election victory.
September 30, 1955 – Actor James Dean was killed in a car crash in California at age 24. Although he made just three major movies, he remains one of the film industry’s most influential actors.
October 1, 1971 – The iconic Florida amusement park and resort Walt Disney World opens to visitors. Envisioned by Walt Disney as a second park to supplement Disneyland in California, it was constructed under the guidance of Walt’s brother Roy following Walt’s death in 1966. It covers 25,000 acres but only half has been used.
October 1, 1908 – Henry Ford’s Model T goes on sale for the first time. More than 15 million would be made before production ended in 1927.
