Paula talked to us about GiGi’s Playhouse, Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, started in Hoffman Estates by Nancy Gianni.  They now have over 35 playhouses across the USA and one in Mexico.  In the Rockford area, they have a location on North Second Street in Machesney Park.  They exist to educate, inspire and believe – that is, to help build confidence and self-esteem.  Paula explained that their students are often taught to sign at an early age because verbal communication is a challenge due to underdeveloped muscles (like the tongue) which is characteristic of Down Syndrome.  She also said they help with continuing education (government funding ends at age 22 and when they end high school, they can go to GiGi U).  They have annual fundraisers, such as a gala event at Giovanni’s in April and a golf playday.  Thank you, Paula, for coming to visit us with this great information.
